International Expansion Plans At SEA

Wed Sep 26, 2012 4:49 pm

UA used to have more international flights from SEA ( London for example).

I would love to see more direct flights from SEA. Seattle is obviously a destination city (well in the summer) and an important financial center (Boeing, Microsoft, Starbucks, etc).

I am still PO'ed at SK for pulling out a few years ago ( I understand why), but it seems like the following areas could be potential targets for SEA:

- South America
- Australia
- Hong Kong
- various European cities not currently served

Of course AS is the only airline with a true hub at SEA, and as much as I would love to see AS fly 787's around the World, I doubt that will happen anytime soon!!

Anyone know of expansion plans beyond the recent flight to the Middle East? Or possible logical directs flight from SEA?

DL seems to be the one making the most noise for expanding their international ops out of SEA.

How is NH doing with the 772 into SEA? Is the upcoming 788 right-sizing the flight? Also how is the FI flight? Is it a Summer-seasonal flight or a year-round flight?

Weird that we both keep having the same dream!   Would love to see AS start service to LHR, NRT, CPH...if only they had the a/c to do it. Where else would you like to see them go?

I assume you are more referring to long haul outside of Canada and Mexico. GDL and MEX are possibilities if the market strengthens.

PVG on DL is a rumor that's been floating around. HKG is a possibility as well, but probably to a lesser degree.

I'm curious if there is any opportunity in Europe. AKL might be a possibility with Air New Zealand. QF can't make anything other than LAX work, so I doubt QF would be in SEA.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

It flies all year.

I guess with all the partner airlines it is unlikely.
I would think AS would be served well to Japan and Hong Kong at least. I would also think Costa Rica and other locations in Central America.
Europe - definitely London!
NA - Toronto and Detroit.

With the DL partnership it makes it hard not to step on any toes...internationally they fly to pretty much anywhere that is practical out of SEA (HKG withstanding). That said I think you'll see SEA-DTW sooner than later.

The realistic international destinations that I could see AS starting from SEA would be GDL, MEX and YYZ maybe. Maybe QX could consider a few smaller destinations like Comox and Regina, etc.

I don't see AS changing their successful business model to add 787s, as much as we'd all like to see it.

Is DTW coming before RDU, SLC, OKC, PIT, CVG, MEM, TPA and BWI?

A lot of the major European cities are already served: LHR, FRA, CDG, AMS - KEF is part of Europe too, no? - SK pulled out of SEA leaving somewhere in the Scandanavian countries open for the taking I guess. Large population in the SEA area but SK couldn't make it work so maybe not that many traveling there? Or was SK's fare structure too high? I don't know. I can't really see really prime European destination to be added to the above mix.

A nit-pick here, it's a 77W til the 787 takes over next week, not a 772.

South America, probably not going to happen. Look at LAX and SFO and see the minimal service there (and they have more Asia traffic and O&D - not major to deep South America to begin with).
Asia, definately opportunities.
Australia / New Zealand / Oceania, probably not going to happen.
Europe, geography hinders SEA. Carriers will route via LHR, JFK, and ORD.

Seattle is a great town and has great substitute NFL scab referees, but that doesn't fill a flight to GRU, MXP, or AKL.

I wasn't quite sure if it was a 77W or 772. Thanks.

Haha, hats off for the best reply (and jab!!) at the Seahawks game..LOL

I will admit the Seahawks got away with one!!

As for SK - the flight to CPH was usually full (a great airport to transfer from). Very popular flight to Europe. There was an issue with cargo that primarily pulled SK out of SEA. Rotten shame, especially since I am from Norway.

As a SEA native, I consider it payback for the games we were robbed by bad calls - including Super Bowl XL.

*cough* JFK, *cough* DFW. I'd say that QF is more than happy to keep codesharing with Alaska to Seattle though.
