British Airways 747 At Domodedovo Moscow

Thu Sep 27, 2012 6:02 pm

I arrived yesterday at Domodedovo, which I love, it's the land of plane spotting and seeing aircraft so old one asks "what the heck is that thing?"

But I was equally surprised to see a BA 747. Is that a regularly scheduled aircraft? Do they fill it? And is it in a classic configuration? Could I buy a First Class (new) 747 international seat from LHR? Thx

Yes it is, as 30 seconds on ba.com would have told you. As well as schedules, types and classes of service offered.

Earlier this year BA upgraded the Moscow service to long-haul status and they usually use 2x767 and 1x747 in full long-haul configurations - I don't know whether it is a hi-J or mid-J configuration, but you can certainly get F on the 747.

I did read somewhere that they had also used the new mid-haul configured A321 to Moscow as well - but I don't know if that is a regular thing or not.

I think it's High-J, certainly the reason for it is all the super-rich Russians who have property in London (of whom there are enough to have materially affected London house prices) have expensive tastes and high expectations and Club Europe wasn't cutting it - unsurprisingly, a Y seat on an A32X with an upgraded meal is terrible value when you're paying >£800. Hence the jumbo (and longhaul 767s - used to be Club Europe fleet, which is at least a J seat but not much cop - like Emirates' regional J product ie ya wouldn't mind it as an upgrade on a Y ticket but ya wouldn't pay any extra for it).

Have a play with BA.com, pretty user-friendly site.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

I've operated the flight a few times now and I don't think we will be seeing the 747 on the route for too much longer.

While economy has been full each time First is pretty much empty and World Traveller Plus/Club World pretty much filled with involuntary upgrades from World Traveller.

It is.

Every LHR-DME-LHR (BA233/32) rotation this month has been flown by a 'Hi J' 744 configured F14 / J70 / W30 / Y185 except on September 5 and September 18 when a 'Hi J' 744 configured F14 / J70 / W30 / Y177 was used.

With the single 744 rotation and two 763 rotations using aircraft configured J24 / W24 / Y144 and usually two rotations by ex-BD 320s configured J22 / Y102, but sometimes one 320 and one ex-BD 321 configured J23 / Y131 or J31 / Y118, BA are currently offering 14 F Class and between 162 and 173 J Class seats each day in both directions between LHR and DME.

I'd say the Russians would prefer to fly Russian airlines (for so many reasons).
Let's just blame it on yields.

I only had my iPhone with me. I tried to get onto BA.com but it couldn't load. Although I knew I could get deeper info on airliners.net. Duh, I fully realize that websites can provide some of these answers quickly - but cannot answer "why a 747" nor will it provide loads etc. Unless BA.com does tell you how full these 747's are in all classes. If it did it would be the first website to do so that I know of.

But I did get some of those questions answered here.
