16th And Last DL744 To Enter Modification Oct4

Fri Sep 28, 2012 7:59 pm

Ship N673US, the last 744 to enter mods at Paya Lebar, Singapore is sked to fly NRT-SIN on 03Oct and to enter modification on 04Oct. It should be replaced in service by N669US on the same date SIN-NRT.

All 744's are nose to tail AVOD and I believe will get WIFI added by S13.

Does any Delta flyers have an insight to us new delta boys, how good these new flatbeds will be ? more comfy than the old KLM business angled ?

Looks like it now arrives in NRT on 10/04 and then flies to SIN later that day or the next. I'm sure FlightAware will update this by tomorrow.

Maybe 669 isn't finished with mods yet as it's only been about 30days. The NRT-SIN leg still showing a 777 seat map but Delta.com was slow updating TLV-JFK-NRT seat map as it was still showing a 74S yesterday.

I haven't flown in DL's 744/777 type angled flat beds, but the 1-2-1 config flatbeds on the 767 fleet are worlds better than the flat-at-an-angle beds on the 330s. I can only imagine the larger suites on the 744/777 are even nicer. Unless they start using those types to Europe I probably won't get to find out anytime soon

These are flat-bed seats, so they are definitely much better than any angled-flat seat.

Note that Delta has three flat-bed seat types: i) reverse herringbone for the 744 and the A330s; ii) herringbone for the 777; and iii) Thompson Vantage 1-2-1 seats for the 767s (both the -300ER and -400ERs).

i) is similar to the US, CX, and upcoming AA flat-bed seats
ii) is similar to the VS, NZ, 9W, and old CX flat-bed seats
iii) is similar to the LX, AY, and SN flat-bed seats

Video for the 744 flat-bed seat:

Video for the 777 flat-bed seat:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK_FafqILjk&feature=relmfu

Video for the 767 flat-be seat:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N06mWF2yq6c&feature=relmfu

Of the three, my favorite is the new 744/A330 seat, followed by the 767 seat, and lastly, the older 777 seat.

On the DL 764's, it's easier to look out the window than on DL's other lie-flat seats. I've yet to ride in a 74S....we'll see.

Ship 6313 is showing this

10/3 DL 269 TLV-JFK DEP: 00:40 ARR: 06:35
10/3 DL 173 JFK-NRT DEP: 13:50 ARR: 16:55
10/4 DL 173 NRT-MNL DEP: 18:55 ARR: 22:35

After arriving at MNL it doesn't have anything scheduled yet, granted it's right on the edge of the 3 day window.

Ship 6309:

10/3 DL 9955 QPG-SIN DEP: 12:00 ARR: 12:45
10/4 DL 622 SIN-NRT DEP: 06:00 ARR: 13:50
10/4 DL 296 NRT-ATL DEP: 15:55 ARR: 15:05

Also note that its showing that 6316 went to QPG on 9/17 with estimated ready date of 10/16

From the current seat maps on delta.com, it appears that(N673US) is going back to NRT/JFK again(10/5), so maybe there's a current need for 15 744's in service, as there's only one in mods at the moment?

From flightaware, N663US, one of the 1st aircraft to complete mods was sent back to Paya Lebar on 04Oct, so the reason for the delay on 673US, which seems to be back and forth between MNL-TLV via NRT/JFK.

I wonder if "burnsie28" can answer this one? Why has N663US gone to Paya Lebar? Wasn't this one of the first aircraft that had its mods done in PEK before the switch to Paya Lebar? Is DL unhappy with the quality of the mods done in PEK and decided to switch facilities and now the early modded aircraft are having issues or is this just an isolated visit?

I don't think that PEK was ever doing these mods. I , for one, thought that QPG referred to PEK when it was actually WSAP. What's so ironic is that I have flown into Paya Lebar when Changi didn't exist (back in 1979).

In a deleted thread titled "First DL 744 with cabin mods in service", "burnsie28", in reply 34 dated Wednesday Feb 15th 2012, confirmed that N663US was in PEK having the interior mods done. I tried to copy and paste the link but was unable to copy it. I'm not sure how many others were done in PEK, but certainly N670US, N663US and N662US were done in that order.

In late March, N662US left on a routing WSAP-PANC-KDTW. It would not have made $$ sense to start the mods in PEK and move the operation to SIN, and I don't believe that anyone was tracking ship numbers when these mods started as they all seemed to go off tracking at NRT. DL is noted for using "dummy" codes in cities with multiple operations, like QNY, and QPG easily could have been misinterpreted as PEKing.

I was on the 744 right after it flew in from Tokyo as a revenue flight, after being ferried from PEK. However, the first aircraft took a lot longer than originally expected.

I guess that it was the only one done there as the others appear to have returned from WSAP, either via ANC or NRT.

I'm still curious as to why N663US has gone to QPG. Whether it was modded in PEK or QPG six months ago, it seems odd that it is there now. I doubt that it's there for HMV as there are places much closer to the US for that. Can "burnsie28" help out here as you seem to have access to DL's Flight Ops?

Would this be the first 744 going over to get configured for the international WIFI? Sometimes the first installation takes a bit longer to test out and document as I am sure the installation of the wifi antennas has to be carefully thought out to avoid any notable dead spots. Once the recipe is perfected and procedures documented they could probably do the installation at other bases as they did with the domestic fleet.

Come on guys! I know there are people out there who have access to DL's Flight Ops., or who have connections there! Has ship 6303 (N663US), which has already been modded with the lie-flat seats etc. I believe in PEK, gone to QPG for international WiFi installation or for something else? Second request for "burnsie28" to help out, if possible of course!

My understanding the work done on that first a/c in PEK was not up to standard hence the move.

Ship 6303 mods were completed in SIN (Paya Lebar) on 04/09. The aircraft had a turnback to HNL after it had departed from HNL to NRT in late Sept. It departed again 8hrs late. Possibly the reason for being back in SIN. I have no way of finding out. As far as WIFI, I believe those installations on the 744's are sked for early 2013.

Well it appears that the last DL B744 to go into mods, N673US, is due to fly to SIN tomorrow and then on to QPG. What a shame that none of our knowledgeable a.netters who either have contacts in DLs Flight Ops, or who work for DL, have been unable or unwilling to tell us why N663US went back to QPG eleven days ago, having already been modded several months ago. Oh well!

The fifteenth aircraft, (N676NW), has been completed in QPG and leaves for SIN-NRT tomorrow, as the final aircraft to be updated (N673US) replaces it. That leave the mysterious N663US as the other DL B744 to be finished. I wonder whether either of the other aircraft (N662US and N670US) which were originally modded in PEK will also return to QPG, or whether N663US is unique.

The new DL 744 suite is the best premium class product the airline has ever offered. It'd be nice if there was a moveable privacy barrier, but the angling of the suites makes this almost a non-issue.

The flat-bad seat is terrific, with TONS of head and shoulders room.

And DL's IFE on this aircraft is the best I have ever seen. MAYBE it's not on a par with Emirates' ICE system, but the choice of movies and ease-of-use is fantastic. And Delta's food is excellent.

So i'm guessing they didn't redo the galleys or lavs just yet; just the seats and carpeting? I know all the sidewall and overhead lighting was supposed to be replaced.
