Turkish, 747 Or A380?

Their decision was expected for the end of July, so what did they decide? which airliner did they choose?

What they want seems to change from week to week! First they wanted a VLA, then they didn't and I believe that they are now, again, seeking a VLA.

Perhaps some of our Turkish friends could confirm the current position!?

What they need is a realistic opening date for the new airport, then they can have serious discussions about a VLA. Until then, even adding more 77Ws is going to push IST's capacity.

Well that's not what their chairman said just a couple of weeks ago.

As the length and span are about 3m more than the 777-300ER, the 747-8 should just barely fit into a gate at IST (looking at how Google Maps shows a parked 747-400 and 777-300ER). Looking at the map, they park a 737 next to a widebody, but do so with the wings at the same location. So if they could move the 737 forward a bit, that would help with clearance.

This might be why TK are currently only looking at an initial six planes, as that might be all IST can accept.

Did they say they were looking at the 747 and A380 or did you come to that conclusion???

For high demand routes with slot restricted airports such as LHR or JFK.

Could well be, but even that would be pushing it I think. IIRC they have 10 gates and two remote stands which can just take a 77W, and a fleet of 12 aircraft. But these are also the only gates which can take the 333 and 343, of which they have 17 aircraft, and only around 15 other remote pax stands. Factor in aircraft from other carriers and it apparently already gets pretty tight at times.

That is funny!
At present plans, TK will have around 200 frames by 2015, only 36 of them being twin aisles. That is hardly EK like!

well as far as the State of Dubai is concerned, Emirates is going to be their bread & butter once the oil runs out. Dubai has Emirates back... I sincerely doubt Turkey feels the same way about their airline

Is JFK really that slot restricted? They seem to manage quite a few VIP flights on a regular basis whereas London has to send them outside LHR

I have heard JFK is not really that slot restricted, just a few ours out of the day it is. Unless TK wants to transform into the EK model where they are all into connecting people through IST to the stretches of the world they do not need VLA, how much traffic can IST support.

Istanbul is a city of 13.5 million people, primary city in a rapidly developing country of 75 million people. It is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Pretty much sums it up.

Thank you for the correction - that is even less ideal than I was aware of.

I agree, but I think the solution is to wait for the new airport. Making a huge capital investment in new stands for just a year or two doesn't make sense to me, also siting them would be interesting.
