Man, I'd do that in a heartbeat if I was in the neighborhood. Very cool.

But I wonder which runway it will be? They don't give any hints.

If I had time to go to ORD, I would do this!

I too wonder. Is ORD constructing runways currently?

The following is a quote from the marketing e-mail they sent out with the link included in the OP.

Quote:
On October 20, O'Hare International Airport's northernmost runway will take a brief rest from handling aircraft and instead welcome thousands of runners and walkers to raise money for a very important cause.

Based on that, I would imagine it is 9L-27R. This makes sense given that it is the most detached from the remainder of the field, so it shouldn't be too difficult to keep the 5K participants away from the active operations.

That also means that they have to close 14L-32R because of the runway safety area. So 2 runways will be affected

I believe they could still use 32L since the displaced threshold on the north end gives approximately 2,000 feet of RSA beyond the end of the runway.

Last thing you want is an airplane going off the end of 32L and into the runners. So I'd imagine that runway will be closed as well.

That was a typo on my part, I was indeed referring to 32R.

I'm certain 14R-32L would remain in use since it doesn't even intersect 9L-27R. I would imagine they'll also avoid using 14L-32R simply to keep all traffic away from the runway being used for the 5K - my point was merely that it would be out of an abundance of caution, and not because of RSA or any other specific reduction in the necessary clearances for 14L-32R.

I got a kick out of the line that says participants must follow strict security procedures because the event will be on an "active runway."

Really?

Now THAT would be a thrilling experience.

I do a run every year at ISP that runs on two of the runways. Can't remember which ones though. I would do this one if I could get there!

How does security keep folks from spilling over onto active areas?

KAUS did it once upon a time on 17R. It is a two-strip airport with the 9K' 17L/35R remaining open, so all was not too lost.
It was really foggy out with low visibility, which made it doubly awesome, as people were praying out loud that the a/c not land on the incorrect runway; and on a side note: due to the fog they may have not noticed the unique slope up on the last 2K' of the northern end of 17R, for which it is partially renowned.

I just wish they'd have it again. The waking up ludicrously early and driving clear across town in dense fog was worth it, for obvious reasons!

People would certainly run fast if that was the case. The term "run fast or lose your ass" comes to mind...

4R-22L stopping short of 28. Use the high speed turn-offs to create a loop on Sierra.

I believe DFW was the first airport to do a "run the runway" event. We did it in September 1995, just a few days before we opened the then new Rwy 17L/35R on Oct. 1, 1995.

Sounds cool! A friend of mine did the one at FRA in the summer of 2011 right before they opened up the new runway and had a blast. Hopefully traffic won't get stymied too much by taking a runway out of commission for the morning.

I've done the run at YYZ a few times. They have police and security spread out about 50ish meters down the runway. Someone could make a "run" for the active runway but i don't think they would get too far

SGU has done it with the old, now closed airport. Granted, it was no longer an airport when it the event was held, the infrastructure was (and is) still there.

Back in my younger days, our high school cross country team had a yearly meet that was at the old Richards-Gabaur AFB south of Kansas City in Grandview.

Yep I believe so too. This will actually be the 2nd time the city has organized this. I remember I went to the first one in the fall of 2008 when 9L-27R just opening and we able to walk/run down approximately half way down the runway. Starting point was parking lot G as well, and 4L was still active for take-offs! It was a great day and, at the time, I thought a once in a lifetime experience. So glad the city is doing this again!
