TK Starts Kilimanjaro/ Mombasa

Sun Sep 30, 2012 7:24 am

After adding Abidjan, Kinshasa, Djibouti, Sharm-el-Sheikh, Hurghada, Sebha and Nouakchott in Africa all this year, TK is now starting Kilimanjaro and mombasa on a triangular routing.

The flights are 5 weekly on a 737-900ER.

The schedule:

TK673 IST1810 – 0155+1JRO0255+1 – 0355+1MBA0500+1 – 1045+1IST 739 x35

And source - its already on their online timetable:

Another carrier smart enough to tap into the Arusha airport. JRO is the gateway to climbing Kilimanjaro, and Mombasa a terrific resort place. When booking Mt Climbing groups all the time to Kilimanjaro, Mombasa was the number one requested side trip, before or after their climbs. If TK can carry local and/or conditional traffic on the JRO-MBA part, they could get quite a viable run going. Hope it connects well with US, Asia and European departures. The yields are high in this market, and KL (the only real other competition) runs triangle through DAR. Is TK poised to be the next EK?

Why is KL the only other competition! ET have 12-14 flights weekly to JRO also routing via MBA both ways with onward connections to Europe/USA/Asia/Canada. I think ET is much more of a competitor on the route!

Also interesting as both are *A carriers and competing heavily, surprised TK don't do Codeshare via ADD?

That is an amazing amount of routes to open up, and TK should be well poised for African economic growth.

The Kilimanjaro route will mostly be fairly affluent leisure PAX, and nice to give QR some competition. QR and TK's business models seem to get closer every day.

It seems RWA380 is writing from Portland, Oregon. Here is the competition between ET vs KL on PDX-JRO:

Ethiopian: (UA & ET metal, no codeshare ET and UA, so multiple carrier fare)

- PDX-IAD on UA (19 hours connection time, depart next day) IAD-ADD-JRO on ET - daily = 40 hours
- JRO-ADD-FCO-IAD on ET (10 hours connecting time) IAD-PDX on UA = 34 hr 45 min

KLM: (DL & KL metal, but KL flight number for entire journey)

- PDX-AMS-JRO - 5x/week = 20 hr 25 min.
- JRO-AMS-PDX - 5x/week (a/c routing JRO-DAR-AMS-PDX) daily = 24 hr 35 min.

KL offers multiple daily flights PDX-JRO v.v. over other US hubs that are still faster than ET.

schedules are for 17 Dec 2012 both ways.

Thanks for starting this thread.
TK announced couple of years back that they wanted to double the number of airports served in Africa from 17 to 35. It sounded a bit ambitious at the time.
Now, 8 of the 15 739ERs ordered joined the fleet, this goal seems lot closer.
With 16J/135Y these jets were ordered for the African expansion, with extra fuel tanks fitted for the long missions.
These flights might not be all money makers but offer connections at IST.
Also these flights help Turkish businessmen to search for new markets where there are less or no visa requirements.

By the way, what is the total list of new African destinations for TK:
Mogadishu
Kigali
Niamey
Ougadougou
Douale
Yaunde
Aden
Libreville
Male
.....

Yes, a map would be great. Thanks in advance (whoever does it)!

BTW, Male is considered Asia. In fact, Maldives is part of the SAARC (South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation) .... India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Maldives.

They already are, but are flying under the radar so to speak. I think once all the 739's are delivered and the expansion complete we'll see a different TK approach in marketing/publicity instead of being the wallflower they are now- it's almost as if it's intentional trying not to be noticed.

You can add Maputo to the future list.

Turkey and Mozambique two weeks ago signed their first bilateral. Allows for 3x weekly service on each side. LAM apparently will also code-share with TK as its no longer allowed to serve Europe directly itself.

Thank you factsonly, yes this is correct, I was only thinking of connections from the US market. Having booked travel for years for one of the largest Mountain Climbing companies in the country, we booked a lot of JRO tickets, 99% on KL/NW and for the few odd flights we booked KQ via AMS and NBO. KL makes the connections very easy to the US market. ET involves long layovers, even from IAD. If KQ flew to JFK on their 777's I'd expect KQ to be easier than KL.

They are negotiating with Nigeria's government to allow them fly to Kano in the north of the country. KLM recently pulled out of Kano after decades of service, TK would surely fill a vacuum left by the Dutch carrier, as well as provide connections to the Middle East.

Yes, AF recently tried to operate Port Gentil (POG) the oil capital of Gabon and was in talks with the Gabonese CAA to launch A319LR DEdicate services from CDG, but the project never worked: the runway at POG is just enough long and needs works, and AF phased-out the 319LR fleet.

AF prefered to focus on LBV with 5 77W with First Class for the oil and mining industry.

Same issue with Bata in Equatorial Guinea. Now AF focus on SSG with a daily 772ER from CDG via DLA.

Thanks, guys ... for the help. I added/deleted destinations/routes based on your feedbacks. Also, I compiled the list of "potential" destinations based on various news items and your posts ... and have put them on the map just as locations (without any routes). Sorry for the clutter ... there is NO WAY to have a cleaner map with so many happening and intended destinations. But what amazes me is that IST is really well positioned to serve the top 75% of Africa ... the 739 was a great choice for this expansion!

So let's call this ... "TK's African Adventure"

TK is a shooting star. It is riding the Ottoman invasion of Africa as Turkish companies are even outdoing Chinese ones on the continent. They are cornering the VFR traffic from Europe and even more from N. America. I flew them last Dec to ADD with a free stopover in Istanbul. Very good experience overall except the 6 hours in a 738 IST-ADD.

I think TK poses the greatest challenge to ET for north-south traffic in particular. This intra Star competition is probable hard to avoid. I am still surprised TK flies daily to ADD but has limited code share with ET. I hope there is room for both but perhaps not.
