Air Malta New Image And Livery

Sun Sep 30, 2012 10:41 am

Air Malta have just rebranded and repainted their first of 12 aircraft.

Here is their new website:

http://www.airmalta.com/

Photo of the first repainted aircraft:

http://www.airliners.net/photo/Air-Malta/Airbus-A320-214/2165561/L/

I think this a a huge improvement over the previous livery. I have been flying on Air Malta all of my life (I have Maltese relatives) and the previous brand and image were letting down a very good airline.

Please share your thoughts!!

It looks a bit better than the artist impressions I saw but I dont like the Blue/Green/Orange. It would have looked ok without that . Still not as nice as their iconic one they dropped. Seems to happen alot these days.

I love it. Bright, colourful and eye catching. It's everything a livery should be. Not some sort of artistic minimalistic rubbish like Finnair.

Still, not sure about the simple "Malta" titles. I suppose people might mistake it for an advertisement.
But, if that's the effect they planned for, they got it.

I would assume (as a designer myself) was balancing the bold tail and aft with a simple wordmark.

Wow. Way too much going on there for my tastes. Looks like a bad trip with the patterns

Looks a bit like VX. But the Air Malta management team has done some very good work in the past few days. I'm sure there was some sound rationale behind this redesign too.

Is there only one guy who makes all these new liveries? I can't believe a designer can't come up with something new.

So the new trend is colour on the back with a white forward fuselage and big title of airline.

My question would be did Air Malta need a re-brand at this time? A waste of time and money.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Lack of originality is probably driven by the clients. They ask for something that's modern and relevant and it pretty much forces the design toward modern trends. Right now that's a splash of color on the tail, sans-serif font, and possibly all lower case.

That said, this is a big departure from Air Malta's old branding. At first I had mixed feelings as I thought it was a much overdue brand refresh, but not really working for me. Seeing it on an actual airplane instead of the artists rendition, I must admit it is growing on me. The subtle patterns in the colors are nice.
It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems with just potatoes.

I saw the "new" A320, (9H-AEN) at MLA yesterday and today.

I looks very nice, (better than I expected) but personally I liked the old colours.

I have only flown them once so far, (but that is more because I have tended to get early flights from LGW)

Definately a good service, and hope to fly them again next year.

IMO, the greatest problem that they face is FR and U2 flying into their hub.

I love the detail on the tail but then it gets a bit too messy with all that colour and those big titles. The current livery was dated though and those titles needed replacing but if only they could have found a nice blend between the old and new they would have been onto a winner.

To be honest there have been much worse livery updates in recent years, this isn't too bad in comparison to those.

I recall that their was a special livery a while ago, with a picture of Valletta on the side, but whilst it looked good up close, from a distance it just looked like a big brown stain.

As a designer, I like the fact that the livery reads differently from afar and when closer offers more rich detail. The logotype is contempory and clean, which balances well with the busier tail artwork. The drawback for type that is very trendy. In time it may show its age depending on where type design trends go. When using more classic type like American and British, the design can live longer without looking too dated.

I definitely agree with you! The better designs are simpler - with tasteful artwork that speaks for itself and doesn't overwhelm. I also don't care for the airline logo on the bottom of the fuselage (which seems to have been started by Emirates). If an airline wants its logo to be seen by people on the ground, put it on the wings, as Alitalia did. Much nicer and more tasteful IMO.

I note that it says "Airline for the Maltese Islands".

Malta consists primarily of Malta, Gozo and Comino, not just Malta. I wonder if local politics were a factor in the decision to re brand.

I really like this new livery, it is bright but classy!

I think the small details on the tail are what complete it, yet it maybe a slightly patchwork effect but I like the way the detail pulls it together and saves it from being bland and cheap splotches of colour!

They also recently introduced new uniforms:

http://www.maltastar.com/dart/20120601-air-malta-launches-new-uniforms

Very nice and classy too, I like the hat. Hats seem to be increasinly coming back as uniform components as airlines atempt to reclaim some glamour.

Love it! It's fresh and contemporary. Much better than the old livery, which had become horribly dated.

Oh, I get the simplicity of the font.

I didn't express myself correctly. I mean I'm not sure about the absence of the "Air" in the titles.

Saw this website few months ago.... it tells you how the design works and where it comes from.

I like the new livery, fresh and still the most important icon.

LOL I know what you mean. I feel the same. I liked the outgoing livery -- it had a classic dignified look. The new livery is too noisy -- too many colours near the tail -- it assaults the senses. But it's not ugly.
I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Am I the only one who had a bit of a love affair with the old livery????

I remember flying Air Malta when they just had one A320 in the colour scheme (think it was around 1989) and thinking it was way ahead of its time design wise.

But now the new livery is actually on an aircraft I admit I like the texture on the tail but I still think its too charter looking and the "Sure" or "Nike" tick towards the back just looks out of place!
My views are my own and do not reflect any other person or organisation.

I think the old one really smacked of the 1980s and had become dated. Remember the Boeing house colours for the 757 and 767? And, of course the Britannia colours from the same era.

This livery is great, it's dynamic and colorful. Definitely better than the older one.
Website on the other hand doesn't look that great, bad taste on color combination, typefaces and layout — looks like a cheap booking site.
