If the registration in the article is accurate, then it's actually a DH-84 Dragon and not a DH-89 Dragon Rapide.

Anyway, I hope those people will turn up okay. I'm a big fan of classic DeHavilland so I'm quite shocked by this news...

It is believed the plane is a vintage red de Havilland Dragon DH-84, built in 1934 and one of only four in the world.

Police are co-ordinating a ground search in the area of the beacon being activated and, in addition to two helicopters, a rescue Dornier has been called in to assist.

As the search continues, it has emerged that the pilot of the missing aircraft had previously been involved in a fatal crash:

Quote:
Mr Porter survived a fatal crash in the same model airplane which claimed the lives of his father and brother in the 1950s.
He was 10 when the plane flown by his father went down in a creek in Brisbane's south in 1954.
