LAN Launches 787 Services

Mon Oct 01, 2012 6:29 pm

Today LAN Airlines became the first carrier in the Americas to launch Boeing 787 services. This morning, LA455 operated SCL-EZE and LA456 is currently flying EZE-SCL. Initially, LAN will be operating 787 flights on the SCL-EZE and SCL-LIM routes for crew familiarization purposes. LAN will then deploy the 787s on routes to LAX and on the SCL-MAD-FRA route.

Excellent news! Thanks for sharing, I want to fly on LAN's 787. Need to come up with an excuse to fly to the South Cone first though

Of course! It was a historic moment for both LAN and South American aviation since CC-BBA is the first 787 delivered to a carrier based in the Americas and this was the first 787 revenue flight operated within the Americas. The flight was absolutely thrilling and LAN's 787 is very impressive! Looking forward to flying on more 787 flights soon.

In my opinion, I see LAN flying the most exciting new routes with the 787. Of all the airlines who have received them, I see them launching the greatest number of *new* long haul routes with the type.

I do realize the initial flights will be crew familiarization.    But when LAN has ETOPS 220...    I expect a burst of new routes. Where? Let the a.net speculation begin.

Quoting SCL767 (Thread starter):
LAX and on the SCL-MAD-FRA route.

I would expect new routes once the 787 has matured in LAN's fleet. For example, SCL-FRA *direct*.    Perhaps with a later line number, but that is one potential new route.

Last Thrusday i have the opportunity to fly in the LAN's B787 over Santiago and the Central zone of Chile.

Here is a couple of photos of this experience http://envivodesdescl.blogspot.com/2...l-nuevo-boeing-787-dreamliner.html

Also, LAN will operate 22 weekly flights between SCL and EZE. The operations will made by LAN crew assisted with Boeing pilots during the next two weeks. By the mid October the company expects the reception of its second B787.

Best Regards,

Given the 788 has the range, why not fly from SCL direct to LAX? The same could be said for SFO. Is there a ton of connecting traffic at LIM that justifies the stop?

Yes, LIM is a major hub for LAN. LA600/LA601 operates daily and LA2604/LA2605 will soon increase to 6x weekly. Currently, LAN Airlines is the only LATAM affiliate carrier that operates the 787.

LA600: SCL-LIM-LAX daily
LA601: LAX-LIM-SCL daily

LA2604: LIM-LAX increases to 6x weekly (operated by LAN Perú)
LA2605: LAX-LIM increases to 6x weekly (operated by LAN Perú)

LAN will deploy the 787 on LA602/LA603 3x weekly. The SCL-LAX route operates on a seasonal basis from December through March.

LA602: SCL-LAX 3x weekly
LA603: LAX-SCL 3x weekly

Apparently LAN will be operating a special flight to Lima and Guayaquil today (October 2):

Lima – Guayaquil eff 02OCT12
LA1630 LIM0610 – 0835GYE 787 2
LA1631 GYE0945 – 1140LIM 787 2

SCL767, can you confirm this ?!

That's not true. I'm sure JFK will eventually see a LAN 787, just not this year nor the next one.

The 763 HAS the range to fly to LAX non-stop from SCL, but for some reason LAN only offers non-stop flights during the southern summer season.

LIM is LAN's main hub for North American flights, not to mention the fact that LIM has more demand for flights to North America than SCL. LAN knows this.

Initially, LAN will deploy the 787s on existing long-haul routes, i.e. SCL-LIM-LAX and SCL-MAD-FRA. However, for the NS 2013 season, the A343s are now scheduled to operate the SCL-AKL-SYD and SCL-LIM-LAX routes. After receiving the fifth 787 next year, LAN may launch new long-haul route(s) with the 787s. LAN has shown an interest in launching long-haul flights to BCN, FCO and LHR.

That is a duplicate flight in the GDS. LAN Perú now operates the LIM-GYE route daily with the B763 instead of LAN Ecuador. This is due to recent operational changes made by LAN Ecuador on the GYE-JFK route. LAN Ecuador will increase frequency on the GYE-JFK route to 9x weekly starting on 05OCT12 and will further increase frequency on the route to 11x weekly starting on 03DEC12. LAN is currently reprogramming certain flights on the SCL-EZE route as it plans to increase the frequency of 787 operated flights on the SCL-EZE route to 22x weekly very soon.

I did not mean to imply that LAN wouldn't use the 787s on existing routes. I simply see them launching more new long haul routes that would be 'unique.' Of course they will cut costs on existing flights. However, many of the new flights will not just be 'aircraft replacement' but new routes. Some will just be new frequencies, but I see LAN having tremendous potential for new routes.

Wow, how proud to see the first 787 in America was a Chilean one uniting a Chile and Argentina!
SCL and EZE are the first airports of the whole continent handling regular 787. How much this talk of the moment Latin America is leaving and the links we Chilean and Argentine have beyond any rivalry!

Great for Lan, Chile and Argentina

The 787 hasn't been deployed to LIM as yet. The first 787 is currently deployed only on the SCL-EZE route and LAN will soon increase the frequency of 787 operated flights on the SCL-EZE route to 22x weekly. When LAN receives its second 787 CC-BBB in a couple weeks, LAN will launch 787 services on the SCL-LIM route.

Absolutely! LAN views the 787 as a "game changer" and plans to launch new routes with the 787s. Indeed, LAN's potential to launch new routes has grown tremendously not only due to the rapid increase in air traffic in South America, but also due to LAN's merger with TAM. LAN's Boeing 787 Project Director Justin Siegel recently gave an interview to ATW (http://atwonline.com/issue/october-2012) where he stated, "Many airlines are buying the 787 as a replacement aircraft. We're using it for growth." He also stated that, "Eventually, the 787 will be more used for flights to Europe...because that's where you get the most benefits."

Also, LAN continues to receive new B-767-316ERs and plans to operate the 763s as more 787s arrive. LAN currently has a fleet of 34 B763s. So far this year, LAN took delivery of 5 new B-767-316ERs:
CC-BDD
CC-BDE
CC-BDF
CC-BDG
CC-BDH
LAN plans to receive another 5 B-767-316ERs this year:
CC-BDI
CC-BDJ
CC-BDK
CC-BDL
CC-BDM
And will also receive 4 new B-767-316ERs next year.

Three different LAN affiliates will soon operate into JFK. By deploying the B763s into JFK, LAN has flexibility to rotate the a/c between different affiliate carriers on certain days. Also, some a/c spend over 12 hours on the ground at JFK.

Wow!!    I didn't know LAN was still receiving 763ERs. Do you know the financing terms? Short term lease which implies to cover 787 delays or are these long term leases/purchases? The later implies for expansion to keep 787s free for new routes.

LAN Airlines placed two separate orders for B-767-316ERs last year and exercised options, (LAN always has options). LAN obviously received preferential rates for the B-767-316ERs from Boeing due to the delays with the 787s. LAN is actually renewing its fleet of B767s. This year, LAN returned two older B763s to their lessors. LAN will use the new B-767-316ERs to increase frequencies on existing routes and will launch new routes with them in the very near-term. LAN has already started to increase frequencies into the U.S. from SCL, LIM and GYE with the B763s. Also, a certain number of B-767-316ERs will be deployed to LAN Colombia in order to increase capacity on existing routes and to launch new routes via BOG. LAN certainly has aggressive growth plans in the works. LAN's training facilities are operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week! LAN recently purchased 10 sets of blended winglets for the new B-767-316ERs.

LAN Perú recently inaugurated a new training center near its hub at the Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima. The new facility currently offers training on a CAE Airbus A320 full-flight simulator and will soon offer Boeing 767 full-flight simulator training. This is LATAM's third training center in South America. Last year, LAN greatly expanded its CAE training facilities in Santiago de Chile and plans to add a B-787 full-flight simulator next year.

My apologies if this was mentioned above and I missed it; what is the timeline for LA to start services to LAX?

They fly to LAX and SFO via LIM. I believe LAX is due to start seasonal non-stop service from SCL next year?

Actually, LAN will operate nonstop flights between SCL and LAX beginning this November. These seasonal flights will last through March 2013. Moreover, these seasonal flights will see the Boeing 787 as pointed out by SCL767.

I was unclear in my wording; I was referring to 78 service, I know they fly to LAX with the 767.

So we'll see the 787 next month. Great.
The 747 will always be the TRUE queen of the skies!

That's great to see; I hope they'll go n/s to SFO when demand warrants it as well. Its great to see this airline open up new markets and pushing the envelope in developing their business in S.America.

The 787's are probably going to open up new European destinations not existing destinations like JFK or MIA.

Eventually all LAN operated flights to LAX and MAD will operate with the 787s. LATAM plans to open 4 new destinations within Europe by the end of 2014; most likely by LAN with the 787s.

LAN Perú operates the LIM-SFO route non-stop. That service is not operated by LAN Airlines. LAN Perú will launch a new route to the U.S. next year using the B767.

I understand the aircraft are probably part of the B787 delays but wouldn't it make sense to operate one type opposed to operating the B763 & B787 alongside one another...?

The 767-300ER passenger model works well for LAN on certain missions and they also have a 767-300F freighter fleet so they have operating synergies.

LA601 LAX 12:30 LIM 00:05+1-01:15 SCL 06:40 Daily B763/B787

LA2604 LIM 12:55 LAX 18:50 B763 6x weekly (Operated by LAN Perú)
LA2505 LAX 21:15 LIM 08:50+1 B763 6x weekly (Operated by LAN Perú)

LA602 SCL 23:50 LAX 06:10+1 B763/B787 (Tu, Th, Sa)

SCL-EZE is blocked at 02:05 hrs. and EZE-SCL is blocked at 02:20 hrs. SCL-LIM is blocked at 03:45 hrs. and LIM-SCL is blocked at 03:35 hrs.

Just like JFK, MIA will not receive 787 services for a while. The 787s will primarily replace the B763s and A343s on certain long-haul flights and will be utilized to launch new routes from LATAM's hubs in South America to destinations in Europe.
