UA Gold Stripe?

Thu Oct 04, 2012 3:19 pm

By now we've probably all seen pics of the UA 787 delivered in a scheme which changed the existing straight-edge gold fuselage stripe to a more flowing one. Personally I think it's a nice upgrade to the scheme - lending an air of friendliness to a design that is just a bit foursquare and blocky.

Does anyone know if this is planned fleetwide, or just for the 787?

So far it's just planned for the 787.

I don't think they will change the livery in the nearest future. They have just repainted the whole fleet after the merger with Continental.
By the way, the flowing stripe is better looking!

Just nitpicking -- livery repainting has now been completed on 1009 of 1303 airframes (77%).

It would be nice if it was done fleet wide. But I'm not holding my breath.

Just for the787, that stripe would be a BEAR to maintain and would cause roblems were a radome to have to be replaced on a 787 which is NOT a rare occurrence since Ice Hail Birds and the like have an affinity for damaging radomes of ALL airplanes

the curve fits the 787 nose profile in a nice way IMO.

I love the 787 stripe, but I've heard that it's only for the one plane. I think they should come up with a totally new livery, to promote the NEW airline, IMO. However, with the recent trends of 99% white with plain titles, I kinda hope not...

They should paint them all in the Saul Bass Livery!

The United 787 livery is just a hybrid of the standard United livery and the Boeing house livery. I do like it but I doubt it will be found on any other type. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the entire 787 fleet does not receive this livery.

They've ordered quite a large number of frames (50, no?). If one is delivered every month, it will take six years to deliver them all. I agree that it is unlikely that they will be making a very big deal over 787 deliveries in six years. That livery with all those curves is expensive to paint, I'd wager.

All 787s will receive this livery.

Is that confirmed? All 50? Or just the 788's?

Is there any reason for all the special 787 liveries? It seems everyone is at it...

Not familiar with the actual part numbers, but typically speaking, components like radomes are unique per type, no? They wouldn't be putting a 739 radome on a 788 as an example, so I'm not sure I follow your logic.

I'm not a big fan of the curved line - I don't think it is as smart as the standard UA livery. Reminds me of the Thomson 787 (the photo below is the planned 787 scheme on a 767)

According to the company, the new "stripe" livery on the 787's are a tribute to both Boeing (their house livery) and United. A part of the "Working Together" culture that we are supposed to be creating, and the long histories between both companies. That's what we were told in the company newsletter.

I can't wait to see the new bird(s) when they come to EWR.

It's common enough when a new type is introduced. A lot of airlines did it for the 777, too.
