one-time A380

OK. The earth still rotates about its axis. For when I read the thread title, I couldn't understand why EK would send a high-premium configuration to ATH. However, for a one off...    I assume this is a 'stunt' like the one off to BHX. Is there any special event to celebrate on October 26 2012?

Is there a particular reason for this? Given all that has been happening in Greece, Athens in particular, I can't imagine demand is warranting any kind of regular A380 service. I should think this is some kind of P.R. stunt or commemorative flight a la BHX rather than a trial for future regularly scheduled service?

Flying in the middle seat of coach is much better than not flying at all!

EK General manager for Greece has stated EK's commitment to the Greek market and have been pleased with how the route has been supported by travel trade and business/leisure travellers.

October 28th is a major holiday/celebration so a good promo for EK .

Great to see the EK A380 on a one off visit scheduled other than a diversion. This will not be the first time EK has landed their A380 at ATH. A flight from DXB-MAN diverted there before.

Greek millionaires exiled in the UAE with their money, maybe.

I do not think that this move has anything to do with the route being able to support A380 flights but demand for travel in Greece has not fallen as much as you would expect. I was there for 2 weeks this summer, my ticket cost a small fortune and both my inbound/outbound flights to/from ATH were full. Getting a ferry ticket to most islands, as well as accommodation was not a very easy task as everything was fully booked. As for what is happening in Greece, and specifically in Athens, the city is not a war zone despite what you would assume by browsing through the media.

Still though, not a holiday when Greeks would travel abroad, especially now. Curious as to whether the holiday is actually tied to the A380 flight.

That would be London!

US-Greece (a country with little growth and an economy in the verge of collapse, hence traffic is going down) is not comparable with UAE-Greece. EK connects Greece (or Europe) with some of the (still) healthiest economically areas in the world: GCC, India, China, SE Asia and Australia.

Maybe Greece is in a terrible economic situation, but it does not mean that fewer tourists from Asia are travelling to Greece for holiday (or even foreign companies buying local companies or properties at a discount). Many more Greeks will migrate to those rising Asian economies (there is also an historically large Greek community in Australia), especially now that the rest of Europe is also getting in trouble. And finally Greek companies (if they haven't gone bankrupt) are probably expanding their operations to those same areas of the world.

As a matter of fact, during the last year, EK has started services to Barcelona, Dublin and Lisbon, and they have also increased frequencies to Madrid, Milan, Rome and Venice (actually Rome is now served also by the A380).

Hit the nail on the head. Also even trade with neighbours to the East have increased. Take Turkey for example in the first half of 2012 48% increase in exports to Turkey mostly fuel. Turkish Airlines are always advertising out of Athens these days to USA and Canada. Having taken the route myself YYZ-IST-ATH its a very good service and fares are very good.

Lets also point to the foreign companies interested in tapping into the estimated $600 Billion of natural gas off Crete that is becoming more interesting by the day . If estimates are correct it could fuel the EU for 6 years and raise much needed cash for the state.

Despite huge drops in figures for routes that were historically stable we are seeing a shift to emerging markets as mentioned above. Airlines will come and go and new routes will commence and some old ones cease. People are still flying into and out of Greece.
