Debris On Runway At LAX

Sun Oct 07, 2012 5:49 pm

I left LAX on UA 891 at 12:49p to NRT Saturday, and after leaving the gate, the first officer came on the PA and said something along the lines of:

a) one runway is closed for maintenance
b) 'we saw debris on' ... the other runway we were destined to take off on.

We held a while while waiting for that being cleaned. After a while he came back on again and sais the wait would be longer as heavier equipment would be needed to sweep the runway, and that there would be an option for them to shut down the engines (to conserve fuel I gather). Very shortly thereafter we did however take off.

Sadly Channel 9 was not on, and as I didn't have a window seat I can't say more...

I wonder what that 'debris' could have been? I see no mention of any incident @LAX

anyone got a clearer picture..

It's often debris from a bird strike and may require sweeping depending on the number and size of the birds. There are of course other possibilities, such as rubber debris from blown tires.
