PDT Dash 8 Fire In PHL

Sun Oct 07, 2012 6:56 pm

This morning in PHL a PDT Dash 8 was extensively damaged by an electrical fire at the gate. Judging from the pictures, the fire appears to have originated from a faulty GPU plug/cord. I wouldn't be surprised if the aircraft is W/O as a result. I believe the ship involved is N936HA.

If so, quite a tragedy (for the aircraft), but hopefully no one was injured in the incident. I have always had a soft spot for the Dash (since my first flight in one - coincidentally on Henson), so it's unfortunate that another one will leave the skies for good.

Can you post a link to the pictures?

Sucks for the plane, though. The dash's have always been some of my favorite planes.

It is a real shame. The a/c flew so many years, almost reaching timeout, for it to end up damaged like this. As for pictures, I would rather not post any to this site. In today's litigious society, I am not about to possibly put my job on the line. Hopefully you understand.

Completely understand. Never would have asked if I knew it would out your job in jeopardy. I had thought you had found an article online. Must be a sad sight, though.

Thanks Spiritair. Yeah it's pretty charred up and has dry chemical extinguisher agent sprayed throughout the forward equipment bay.

Not good! That one has (had?) a few more years of life left in it. Were there pax on board at the time?

Why would they send it there? Do they have some kind of MX facilities? Anything that couldn't be done at PHL?

SBY is PDT HQ it has two large hangers one of which PDT uses for Heavy checks. Yeah 936 was cleaned up and sent to the Bury. Doubt it will be written off I give it a week or two and you will be seeing it out on the line again. it just might look like 806EX. PDT can't afford to write off a -100 that isn't close to timing out. hopefully PDT can get some more or new aircraft on property so that this doesn't effect them to much.

Piedmont has Maintenance facilities at ROA, SBY, and MDT. PHL just has regular line maintenance.

I see the external power plug from the GPU on the ground next to the airplane. Bet the wires inside the plug were broken. This causes high resistance and in turn possibly enough heat to ignite the plug.

Does the GPU have one?

That airplane will be flying by the end of the week. Scorch marks and all.

Well, it's nice to know that it isn't the end for this aircraft   The Dash 8s are tough birds!

I don't know this for sure, but given the airplane flew out, I'm betting it will be back in service soon.

Thats normal. PHL-SBY is a short leg.

I hope there was a reason besides failing to check the cord. For a GPU cord to get that bad, the cord had to be ignored for a long time. It's a wonder someone didn't get hurt.

The aircraft does have current limiters in the external power feed circuit, however by the photo it appears this fire was not on board the aircraft. The GPU most likely does not have a C/B in its power cable circuit.

If it was the GPU plug that caught fire it would be a very rare event, I've never heard of one catching fire, but I have encountered GPU plugs that have gotten hot enough to be uncomfortable to handle and give off burning smells. When investigated wire strands in the plug are found broken, the current is then forced to travel through the remaining wire.

Looking at the photo it looks like the power cord failed....not the aircraft.

If I had to guess I'd say that can be repaired. I've seen that much or more damage from a bird strike. And this probably won't smell nearly as bad! Anybody know how many hours/cycles on that Dash?
