US 733 Seating, C. 1986-1987

Sun Oct 07, 2012 10:16 pm

I recently found a picture taken by my parents of me as a toddler sprawled out across an entire row on what I believe is a US 733 on a LAX-IND flight some time around 1986 or 1987. The seats seem to be rear facing, but I don't have the photo and I'm just going from memory. Another thing that caught my eye was what appeared to be a table opposite the three seats. Did US have club-style seating on its 733's at the time?

I've done a photo search and a form search and haven't been able to find anything.

Before USAir introduced first class, the first rows of many of their aircraft had club style seating with the folding table in the middle. I remember sitting in these on both the D9S and the 733 in the mid-1980's. The one time I flew on their 72S PIT-TPA, the seats were normal up to the bulkhead. Not sure about the B11 or 73S flights they operated at the same time, I flew on these types during the same period, but never sat in this section so I don't remember. During this period, I flew more than a dozen times TPA-PIT-ABE and back and I am certain that for a period of time, before the introduction of First Class and the merger with Piedmont, this type of seating configuration did exist.

Probably at the time your picture was taken, it was an AL 733, not US.

Well, not sure when they stopped using the AL code. If it was still being used into the late 80's, then yes, that's what I meant. Interesting that it was found on several aircraft types in the fleet!

Was USAir really that late in introducing first class?

Yes the 733's did have rear facing seats with a table in the middle. I was on one of these on a FLL-PIT flight around the time you are talking about. It was not a folding table but a permanant table between the row of seats.

I recall the club seating on the 732, 733 and D9S. The 111's did not have this arrangement nor did the 580.

Can you scan and upload the picture to MyAviation.net and give us a link to it?

The first row of many USAir aircraft featured club seating in the 1980's. I remember that is where all the unaccompanied minors used to sit on my frequent PIT-BNA UMNR runs.
