OS Unveils New Business Class Seat

Mon Oct 08, 2012 8:59 pm

Via the ever reliable AustrianAvation.net, the new OS Business Class seat:

http://www.austrianaviation.net/news...eue-business-class-online-vor.html

Unfortunately, OS has taken the site offline until the official unveiling, but from the pictures it looks very good! Now, just get rid of that awful green, especially the carpeting.

Except that, in the first pic, we can tell that it doesn't go full flat. The bottom cushion is sloped toward the footwell.
Are DL and LAX seats this same way?

They are all supposed to be full-flat, including the OS one...no idea why the seat looks that way in that pic...
I have flown the LX, AY, and DL ones, and they all go 180 degrees flat.

Same as the ones BA are installing on the former BMI A321s!

Love it. Those screens and the double armrest are awesome! (P.S: Never flew LX, SN, AY or DL so i can't judge).

When and on what aircraft will Austrian install these on?

Which were ordered by, and I believe delivered to, BD for their [now BAs] A321s while they were still part of the LH group - as of course are OS.

Could it have anything to do with the aircraft not flying completely level inflight?

I thought the exact same thing!

How important is product differentiation vs. the enormous cost to develop such seats (UA's efforts on their premium cabins with Pentagram come to mind)? Are these as "off-the-shelf" as they seem to the untrained eye?

All fully flat seats are on an incline of a couple of degrees when you look at direct side on photos.

It looks like a decent enough product, though it doesn't have the same class as similar products. That bed looks awfully lumpy as well, especially at the join between the back of the seat and the seat cushion itself.

Looks exactly the same as SN's newest Business Class   . A good choice as well because those seats are pretty comfortable. Even the IFE is exactly the same.
Although the picture is showing that the seat is not a full flat seat but I'm sure it is, since it's the same model as LX and SN.

Nice choice OS!

Do the guys who design these seats actually sit in them?

I don't think that seat looks comfortable at all. Part of your body is going to fall between the cushions. Your body will be angled above or below the waist in sleeping position whether you like it or not.

Surely it isn't that difficult, with modern computer graphics and ergonomic study, to get a fully flat surface to lay on.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

yup, typically there is a 3 degree incline. I heard from someone that some fo the big airlines, especially for the F seats will have their marketing seats (ei the ones they put on display / use for commercials etc) go fully flat so that it shows it as it would be in flight...

similar. I'm not familiar with the companies that make the seats... but i do know that there are variations. yes they all choose the finish of the seat and module specific to their brand, but also other things like DL offers this in a 1-2-1 on there 764er (and just coming onto their 763er) but this is the type that has the thrown seat, such as LX, where instead of just offsetting two seats back and forth each row, they have a row with 2 seats, then a row with one seat (and two big side tables) then two seats etc etc... maybe its because of the size of the aircraft, or DL simply trying to fit more seats in.

so it looks like its following LX rather than the DL side, which having flown both, is, in my opinion the right way to go! plus there seems to be a few modern twists (such as the remote, PTV, seat controller)

looks great, I'd be onboard to try this!

As a seat, this is definitely a great improvement. Other than that, it looks very 'bland': the current C-cabin has such a great design scheme. The current C-class seat is just a regular lie-flat seat, but it really stands out due to its colors and wood patterned back shell. It's sad that they chose some boring colors for this one.

Congratulations to my wonderful little home airline! While it is well known that Austrian has been struggling recently, I am glad to see that they have invested in the new cabins and an overall more competitive product on longhauls. These long overdue upgrades paired with Austrian's inflight service and catering will definitely make them a viable option on my next Atlantic crossing.

Does anyone have any info on economy class updates? Given the cross-pollination in the LH group, I imagine they might have chosen the same models as SN. I

I would suggest that they [or their design colleagues] are much more likely to sit on the seats than a.net armchair commentators who delight in criticising everything before its given a chance.

WIth Austrian, Brussels and Swiss all using this seat, why on earth has Lufthansa itself not chosen this model but another design which gets many extremely critical reviews?

maybe its because of the size of the aircraft, or DL simply trying to fit more seats in.

It is because of the aircraft type. Delta has this seat only on their 767s, which have a narrower fueslage than the A330s, where LX, AY, and SN have installed theirs. As a result, DL's is just 1-2-1 so every seat has direct aisle access, whereas the LX/AY/SN model means every other row on one side has a window seat that is 'stuck' with no direct aisle access (the config is 1-2-1 and then 2-2-1 for the next row).

I believe they are installing them onto the 777s and the 767s.

Looks good, taking OS up to industry standards. Much needed.

Actually, it is 1-2-1 and 2-1-2 on SN.

Only 5 of 45 seats on LX A333s/343s lack direct aisle access, and those seats are probably attractive for passengers travelling in pairs who also prefer window seats. And probably not that many flights where the load factor exceeds 88% where those seats would have to be used by single passengers who prefer direct aisle access.

This is true as the aircraft even at cruise never flies flat, I believe generally the incline is 3 Degrees. If the seat was flat the incline would be uncomfortable reversed.

Looks great to me! Nice big screen, crisp clean modern design, much better then the current design and style.

Now all they need is new uniforms!
