Air Canada Contest..."Name Our New Lcc"

Wed Oct 10, 2012 8:03 pm

This is certainly innovative. Air Canada will allow people (via Facebook) to choose the name of the new low-cost leisure airlne.

I'm guessing my suggestion „I've seen this movie before, and It doesn't end well-Express“ isn't going to win.

all well.

How about 'Canadian', surely AC still have the rights to this.

Edit - or even better, CP Air  Wink

Cheapotle
Déjà-vol Air (it helps if you understand French)
Loonie Line
Merengue (for "La Mer and Go", as opposed to "Tan and Go")
Smartairse

or simply Cumulus Granitus, as in "the destination of our business plan"

CP called it's longhaul international business class product "Royal Canadian Class" for a few years. I recall KLM complaining about the name. AMS was of course CP's major gateway in Europe then. KLM called their first class product "Royal Class" for years and didn't like the word "Royal" in the name of the new CP J product (which used the same seats previously used for F class before F class sleeper seats were introduced).

It wasn't long after that KL dropped F class and introduced their own upgraded business class product. CP also eliminated F class around the same time, as did AC.

I'm sure they could come up with lots of good names.. Air Maple or how about Avril?

If they go with the latter, they could come up with a jingle in the commercials
"Tell me.. why do you have to go and make things so damn trashy?
But I see the way you're priced like you're nobody and that gets me excited"

Failure International
We aren't kidding, we're trying this again by Air Canada
I can't figure out why airlines try this over and over and expect a different result. Isn't that the definition of insanity? They must know something we don't, but I can't figure out what it is.

It's not so much trying to play the LCC game again,as it is more likely a long term exercise/execution of a plan to downsize the mainline fleet/operation with it's inherent legacy costs and operational structure. AC long term viability is at stake and they cannot continue on business as usual while their main competitor morphs and eats their lunch. There is a future for a legacy operator such as AC,however, times have changed. Today's air travel market is one where the consumer generally see's the product(seat)as a commodity and the lowest price rules. Future growth in my view will occur at the LCC,with the mainline operation chasing premium yield where it exists.

I can only hope that they don't pick an awful tacky name for the new venture. As mentioned, choosing a name that works in both official languages will be interesting,it might have to be a compromise and ultimately less effective.

I think I've just dreamt up the perfect name. One which succinctly captures this entire philosophy, yet is wholly original...

With French dominant? Ummm....no. That will not play well in English Canada (which is 80% of Canada), let alone make sense from a marketing standpoint. The name should reach out to the (primarily English) customer base, which means an English name only, rather than pander to some archaic and arguably racist bilingual "edict".

All these English names are non-starters. The name will be workable in English and French. They could have some fun with "Wardair" since its a leisure carrier brand that people remember fondly but unfortunately it was named after a real person who is still alive and would have an opinion on resurrection of the brand.

AC is governed by ACCPA, as you well know, and is legally required to operate bilingually. Extending this to a brand is not a stretch (Jazz itself being essentially bilingual, for example). Sunwing is not governed by ACCPA and can therefore do as it pleases.

Anglo Canada would refer to it as Air Canada Leisure, Franco Canada would refer to it as Vacances Air Canada. And given the last statement, I will make no direct comment lest your friends the mods come after me.
