New U2 Flights From EDI

Thu Oct 11, 2012 2:20 pm

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-19908611

U2 have announced an interesting selection of new routes and a further two aircraft to be based at EDI.

As far as I can remember:-

EDI-HAM has been tried before. I'm not sure which airline (Scottish European? Duo?) but it didn't last. I think BA Cityflier also had a go at it with a similar outcome.
EDI-PRG and EDI-DBV both compete with LS
EDI-CPH competes with DY and BD (if you can call flying an A319 against an Embraer 145 competition!)
EDI-(presumably) SXF replaces a route which FR previously operated

Looks like interesting times ahead with EZY flooding some of those markets with low cost seats. Prague is not as popular as it once was and Dubrovnik is very seasonal. Jet 2 however have a habit of holding their ground. Will be interesting to see where all the extra passengers come from either in or outbound. Looks like lots of bargain seats all round !
Would have preferred some full service mainline carriers on the German routes especially, guess they will be unlikely now. Why did HAM and BER fail previously ? If anyone can stimulate low cost pax on those routes it is EZY.
Im guess the new based aircraft will be A319's rather than A320's ?

The last airline I remember on that route was Hapag-Lloyd Express (HLX), don't know if LH Cityline gave it a try as well. Anyway, U2 might have a chance as there is no Northern Germany - Scotland connection at all after Ryanair's withdrawal from BRE-EDI.

As far as I know HAM failed because of lack of demand. I've just checked and it was BA Connect, not Cityflier, which last tried it in 2006.

FR pulled out of EDI-SXF allegedly because of costs:

I wish U2 well - I fly them whenever possible and rate them as an excellent operation. However they tried to compete with 4U on the EDI-CGN route and gave up after little more than a year.

In reference to the CGN route that had surprised me because they were in the local media not too long before discontinuing the service saying it had done well and was being upgraded to an A320. I had hoped they may have given it another go.

The frequency offered by BA Connect on EDI-HAM was dreadful, only twice-weekly I seem to recall. The route did much better under HLX, however they decided to pull the plug on their HAM base and the EDI route therefore vanished. At a sensible frequency EZY should do much better on EDI-HAM.

The BA connect fares would have put off the majority, looks as if the HAM route is more suited to a low cost operation. HAM gets very nice reviews. One would assume an EZY frequency would be 5-7 days

HAM and the airline landscape in Europe have evolved since 2006. Good to see someone back to try the route, if anyone can make it work it would be U2.
