2014 : AF To Brasilia And A380 To GRU

Fri Oct 19, 2012 1:54 pm

Hello,

AirFrance CEO Alexandre de Juniac was in Brazil yesterday and announced some news :

- AF-KLM flights to Brazil are allways full on each class
- AF to launch Brasilia service in 2014 ( nothing about frequencies or aircraft type )
- AF to introduce A380 on Guarulhos route ( if airport can handle it ) in 2014
- AF wants to boost its partnership with GOL

Brazil is a great market, I´m always saying that IB-BA should invest and grow a lot of more in this market with MAD as a hub, I really hope as soon as they start getting the A330 they will open some new stations. I´m sure they can do well in the place.

I´m not sure if GRU will be ready for the plane but i´m sure they are not the only ones willing to operate there, i´m sure EK will do sooner or later, but here not long ago I read that they are planning or willing to add a second daily flight, so that willl kill the A380.

Not mentionned in the article but GIG should also get the A380 and probably even before GRU.
Brasilia should be 5 x Weekly A332, as with the use if the A380, GIG will then be served only 1 x Daily, the current second daily flight (A332) beeing transfered to KLM.

This is a really good news to see an AF A380 in GRU.

I just hope the airport will be able to handle all the passengers for the arrival and also the departure. Today it is a very big mess during rush hours time. (Morning arrivals and afternoon/evening departure)

I am also sure we should have other A380 coming there for the World cup like LH and maybe BA from Europe and EK for sure too…

FlySSC, do you mean that KLM will operate GIG 2x daily? KL already operates GIG 4x weekly (will shift to 5x next march). I don't know if the bilateral would allow this (don't know if the Brazil-UE openskies is in effect).

No, I guess they meant that KL would become Daily on AMS-GIG, with maybe a bigger offer in seats.

Let's just hope GRU has enough gates to handle it. I'd hate to arrive on the A380 then have to be bus'ed to the terminal along with 500 other people.

By March 13, AF+KL weekly seat offer to GIG will be the following:

AF - 532C / 147W / 3801Y
KL - 175C / 170W / 1245Y

Total AF+KL - 707C / 317W / 5046Y

Switching AF442/3 to the 388, axing AF444/5 and upgrading KL705/6 to a daily 77W service we will have:

AF - 63F / 434C / 266W / 2849Y
KL - 245C / 280W / 2450Y

AF+KL - 63F / 679C / 546W / 5299Y

That could offset losing AF444/5. The only loss would be 28C weekly seats but that is compensated by the offering of First Class service that AF doesn't have at GIG.

My count for AF gives :

63 P (9 x 7)
560 J (80 x 7)
266 W (38 x 7)
2723 Y (389 x 7)

Used as baseline the configuration 9P / 62J / 38W / 407Y.

With your info the math is:

AF - 63P / 560J / 266W / 2723Y
KL - 245J / 280W / 2450Y

AF+KL - 63P / 805J / 546W / 5173Y

Comparing to the MAR13 numbers (707J / 317W / 5046Y) seems an increase in all classes. Which is good. I wonder if KL has enough 77W to operate AMS-GIG daily though.

I'm not surprised. It will be 100% up to the airport.

I read that they are planning or willing to add a second daily flight, so that willl kill the A380.

When? EK has an aircraft shortage right now and in particular they are short of A380s. e.g., LAX was dropped to 1X/day to free up a 777 for expansion. With new higher MTOW 77Ws arriving, more 77Ls will be freed up for destinations such as GRU.

But next year (2013), EK will start to receive the first higher MTOW A380s with the 'wing twist.' They will also receive an engine PIP soon (when? I've totally lost the ball of the implementation of the GP7200 PIP). This will finally give EK an A380 with good range for GRU, LAX, SFO, IAH, and any new ULH destinations that are ready for the up-gauge.

I think GRU will go 2X day while LAX, with its poorer revenue distribution, will probably go A380 (more important to cut the CASM vs. grow the revenue).

Thanks SSC! About KL's 77W, do you think can they spare the planes for a daily 77W service to GIG in the next 12 months?

2014 is a long way away for an airline in such poor financial condition. Also worth mentioning is that 2014 is the year that the World Cup is being hosted in Brazil. When the time comes it will be interesting to see whether this will be just a temporary increase for the WC, or permanent.

You are right but we also can see it differently. It is possible that AF has already decided to launch BSB ( and upgrade GRU ) but has choosen to wait the world cup in order to increase the chance of the launch' success.

I do expect CDG-GIG to become A380 by 2013 during Confederations Cup or later by W13/14
It is a very strong route for AF with no doubt.
I would expect both daylights to GIG and GRU to become A380. During the World Cup, for sure will be easy to expect 2x A380 service to both GIG and GRU.
New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

Now that would be a significant network development in Brazil, which I guess would be sustainable with an even stronger cooperation with GOL for connections.

If it was to happen, wouldn't Brazil become the biggest P2P long haul market for AF, after the USA?
