Thai Increase Capacity To ICN - Up To 7x Daily

Sat Oct 20, 2012 1:32 am

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/art...frequencies-on-some-routes-377225/

According to this article, From Oct 28, TG will be increasing HKT-ICN to daily, which means that TG will have up to 7 daily departures at ICN on certain days. The LAX flight is also getting upgauged to a 77W.

Here's a list of TG departures (no codeshares) from ICN on October 28:

08:15 TG655 HKT A333
09:35 TG659 BKK B773
10:50 TG629 HKG B772 (continues to BKK)
16:25 TG692 LAX B77W
17:30 TG635 TPE A333 (continues to BKK)
19:40 TG693 BKK B772 (becoming B77W on Oct 29)
21:20 TG657 BKK B772

That's an impressive 2,276 daily seats out of ICN. Not bad.

TG will surpass CX's 6 daily flights to ICN to be the 4th largest foreign airline there after CZ, MU and CA, in terms of frequencies. In terms of overall capacity, they should be the largest.
The biggest mistake made by most human beings: Listening to only half, understanding just a quarter and telling double.

Yes, there are a lot of Korean tourist and business men in Thailand. Plus South Korea is now a popular tourist destination for young Thai.

ICN will be the most frequent international destination for TG !!

Who knows? next year TG might switch A380 to ICN

There was a Bangkok Post article not long ago that was suggesting TG was being prevented from expanding fifth freedom flying on the ICN-LAX route beyond the 4 weekly they have now, I think due to the existing bilateral agreement. (TG wants to go daily.) Is there any new news regarding this or bilateral negotiations?

But wasn't it going to be a 744 this coming spring? I have a ticket for next summer ICN-LAX, and it was a 744, and switched to 77W.

Impressive stats. So that's 5 daily plus non-daily LAX in/out bound.
I'm happy that HKT-ICN goes daily in winter. We also have KE and OZ operating this route.
Phuket is very popular and airport will be explode this winter!!

I hope we get to see THAI 380 bird BKK-ICN after KE withdrew the idea.
THAI could possibly add A330-300 BKK-ICN-CNX or A300-600 I'd say.

Thank you for the information,

In this thread the CEO mentioned that Korea was a bright spot in their network

"tourism between Thailand and Korea is growing steadily and most of our profitable growth will come from markets like Korea and Japan.

Does TG time any of its ICN-LAX flights to connect with ICN-HKT?

would make some sense to try an offer as a one stop to HKT (if there is a US market)

That's impressive! Thailand has always been a popular holiday destination for the Koreans. And with the growing influence of K-Pop/K-Drama in Thailand, more and more Thais are interested in holidaying in South Korea. And not to forget that Thais have one of their very own who has made it so big in the South Korean entertainment scene. Never underestimated the power of the entertainment industry

This schedule is quite something and shows just how large a player TG is on major trunk Asian routes. When you add in the frequencies by KE and OZ (both at least twice daily to BKK alone) and the daily flights by 6[?] LCCs, the volume of traffic between Korea and Thailand is just incredible!

What's really interesting with the TG schedule is how the airline has maintained its intra-Asian fifth freedoms ICN-TPE and ICN-HKG, and added frequencies supplementing these flights rather than just merely replaced the onestops with nonstops like other regional airlines.

ICN does seem like a probable candidate but I wonder if TG's A380s are not configured too premium-heavy for this route. It will mean introducing F to the market and the doubling in the number of J class seats for sale. Also the current TG schedules appear to partly rely on the ability to alternate equipment between nonstop and onestop flights - for instance TG656 BKK-ICN is nonstop, but returns as TG629 via HKG. Scheduling the A380 could limit that flexibility somewhat. And if the A380 was to be scheduled on one of the daytime services from BKK to ICN (as it would have to be if the ICN service is sandwiched between long hauls to Europe), these are less than ideal because they make en route (either HKG or TPE) stops. I reckon NRT is a better bet for the A380, at least for now.

Ex-LAX does not connect. TG693 arrives ICN at 1835 (HKT flight would have left at 0815.) Ex-HKT requires a long wait as TG654 arrives ICN at 0625 (TG692 to LAX departs at 1625) but it's still probably the best connection as a routing via BKK will require an overnight stay. The US connection is not a priority I would think as TG can probably fill the plane with ex-ICN passengers alone, especially during winter.

KE seems to be doing well enough on its ICN-CNX flights to upgauge to a daily A333 so it does seem like a viable route.

Does anyone know which configuration of the A330 Thai Airways uses to Seoul?

No airline is offering one stop service between HKT and the US in both directions with reasonable connections. There are 3 HKT-ICN flights, but all are redeyes, so they require a long connection in ICN.

Asiana, Korean, Air China, Cathay Pacifc, offer US-HKT one stop flights with a reasonable connection.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

May I add on....,

apart from airlines above, these airlines offer one-stop service to HKT from the US,

China Eastern Airlines via Shanghai
Air Berlin/Etihad via Abu Dhabi
Emirates (starting 10th Dec) via Dubai
Singapore Airlines/Silk Air via SIN (LAX,EWR nonstop to SIN)

also Qatar Airways with 2 stops service via KUL and Doha.

Have always wondered why TG continues to operate the ICN-TPE-BKK and ICN-HKG-BKK routes.
