New Special Livery For Finnair

Sun Oct 21, 2012 8:26 am

AY is revealing a new special livery on October 27th.

AY pubished a teaser video on Youtube about a new special livery on their A340 (OH-LQD): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGNVPC-ABQs&feature=youtu.be The video doesn't tell much but at the same time a Finnish fashion house Marimekko published their teaser promising to reveal something extraordinary on the same date as AY: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRpwKXkfx3M

It isn't hard to but two and two together, especially since the painters were wearing Marimekko socks. Today Finnair gave us a sneak peek on their Facebook page: http://cmp.finnair.com/competitions/unikko/en/

I'm looking forward to seeing it in full detail. I think it's great since at the same time it's very Finnish but also appeals to AY's largest market, Japan. It brings some much needed color to the grey Finnish winter.

Wow it looks pretty nice. Not much of a "sneak" but more of a "show off." Marimekko's design looks amazing and can't wait to see it in the skies!

Are the Finnish normally this obvious when doing something like this? Because if this was an American company, such as Apple, it's usually top secret until the day of, with of course the rumors flying around like bugs that precede the actual unveiling

You're right. They went all out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tE-GvspWI0U&feature=g-all-u
Looks great IMO. The color combination on the poppies (Unikko) works well with the livery. It would have been nice though if they had put some poppies "under" the FINNAIR titles as well so that the entire aircraft would have been covered.

Yes good to see some color on AY again! A few years back in Finland everything was covered with Marimekko "Poppies", from Nokia phones to rubber boots, a bit too much really. But they look good on A340 I think. I miss the old special liveries, especially Moomins and Santa.

Nice they cooperate with Finnish brands but the Angry Birds stickers were rather modest. The theme flight looked fun though:

Yes both Finnair and Marimekko are active in Japan, Marimekko has been busy opening stores in Japan and China. Recently their "Poppy" patterns were seen in Hong Kong:

Im not really happy how they painted it. Its nice that the plane is not full white but I would like the livery more when the flowers were not so together and not in a line.. when they would make flowers all over the plane and maybe in different colors, as marimekko does, it would perhaps look nicer!

When does the "Santa Claus" Sticker come back?

I don't think Finnish mentality has anything to do with this
The "Poppy" desing is originally from 1960's so nothing top secret there, just never seen on aircraft before.

I would love it, but I haven't heard Santa would return anytime soon.

Anything to distract from their god awful regular livery is welcome. Honestly, what were they thinking?
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

I had no idea who Marimekko was before this thread, and when I saw the name, I immediately thought "Japan," as it easily could be a Japanese name.

Had no idea Finnish people loved Japan that much either    Explains the Finnair ad i saw in Tokyo earlier this year.

At least there are some similarities between Finns and Japanese, like high tolerance of silence and love for raw fish!
You are right, some Finnish words sound Japanese. So do many Finnish names: Mikko, Mika, Aki...

Yes Finnair promote a lot in Japan. The Japanese passengers taking their flights from NRT KIX and NGO to Europe are vital for them. And next spring HEL will see more Japanese passengers, JAL will start a 787 route from NRT then.

This is pretty cool! I am moving to Tokyo in March and my friend is moving to Helsinki sometime soon (she's actually in Finland now visiting friends)

It's pretty cool to see these two connecting as so!

I wonder if AY will do a Totoro livery or something...that would be interesting

Totoro livery on AY would be great or some manga perhaps   The Finnish Moomin cartoons look a bit similar to Totoro, perhaps thats why they have got friends in Japan too. AY MD11 and A340 (see above) carried Moomin stickers, mainly for the Japanese market.

Oh you moving to Japan, I envy you... all that great food.

I was expecting that the whole A343 would have wrapped with the poppy pattern. Or the poppy's would have been bigger ...
