OAG Changes 10/26/2012: DL/F9/UA

Tue Oct 23, 2012 1:07 pm

INSTRUCTIONS

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Non-daily operations create fractional weekly service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. If a flight operated 5 days out of 7, it would show 0.8 flights.

WHY ARE THERE WEIRD FREQUENCIES IN FAR AWAY MONTHS FOR LCCs?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. Their schedules may also end mid-month. If B6 loads their schedule until Jan15, all flights in Janaury will show half frequency because of the way the report is created.

WHY IS A WHOLE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULE SHOWN AS CHANGING FOR A FUTURE MONTH?
Similarly to the previous question, some airlines load their schedule from nothing inside the 9 month window of this report. When their schedule is extended it will show as new service because there was no previous schedule to compare to. In some instances I will show a more valid comparison against another period.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE PINNACLE
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THE FREQUENCY DOESN'T SHOW A CHANGE, E.G. 4>4
This happens as a result of rounding. There is a change in service that is large enough to be listed, but through rounding it does not appear.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

The Mexican carriers seem particularly bad about flip-flopping on their schedule filings. MX was actually the best of the bunch, lol.

I just don't see how DL can't make ANU work at least once a week year round from ATL with all feed. This is probably one of those cases where the upscale ANU market demands more frequency as their target market takes shorter vacations and by making it once a week, one shuts yourself out of the market. The upscale markets are less price sensitive but demand more flexibility.

Yeah AA has no business in this market for the reasons you mention. Unless there is a large amount of traffic to SYD on QF and NRT on JL and HKG on CX plus a good local market originating in LAX that can be leveraged for AA's other routes.

For their sake, I hope the Mexican President's new tact with the drug war stops the violence and helps tourism. CUN is actually as safe as FLL and more safe than MIA.

As the second largest LAX-originating passenger carrier after Southwest, why on earth does an airline hubbed at LAX "have no business" connecting its fourth largest hub to a major Western city?

SLC-LAX is a sizeable O&D market, and in my experience also tends to be rather price sensitive with a fair bit of VFR traffic. If you look at all of the LA airports, there are more than 30 daily flights to SLC, operated by at least 5 carriers (DL, AA, UA, WN and B6). No reason that AA, with a major operation at LAX, can't have 4 of those.

Interesting changes on one of my frequent routes. Mid year, prices went from $383 RT to $608 from CRW and from 2 to 1 flight. Now, at $608 goes to 0 flights. I guess we know that price elasticity is somewhere between $383 and $608.

PMCO scheduling at its best. We've always had 4x in the summer. Last week, there were only 2x when I booked. Now, better times are available...can't figure why they do this in such a manner.

This market does now vary a bit more seasonally but are you aware of the really unusual thing about this route? For as long as I can remember, it has often been a non-symmetrical schedule -- 1 less e/b than w/b flight. For example, the peak summer schedule (this last June) saw 4x daily e/b, including the red-eye, but 5 w/b flights; UA makes up for the extra one-way in either the SFO or the DEN market. The June schedule had 5 e/b flights to DEN and only 4 w/b.

Of course they can balance out capacity in the two directions by way of a/c assignments -- using larger planes on the e/b trips while offering more choices of times but smaller planes on the w/b ones. (That's my theory anyway.)

I just looked it up and January of this year UA did offer about 4 r/t between SAN and ORD so this is kind of odd to see March at only 3 r/t. I would be surprised if the count stays that low for too long.

I believe this is VacationExpress

indeed. Operating on Sundays (I think? Either saturday or sunday)

Thanks for the weekly reports, E   Even though every time I read the DL CVG ones, I die a little more on the inside

Is DL still in CRW at all or not at all?

DL previously loaded a seasonal suspension on DTW-CRW for the months of January & February 2013. They made a slight adjustment on the end date which was previously 1/4/13, now 1/1/13.

DTW-CRW returns in March 2013 at 2x per day.

ATL-CRW remains, flown at 4x CRJ during Jan & Feb, going up to 5x CRJ in March.

This will be the first time they have seasonally suspended the route during the slow Jan & Feb travel period.

CVG-JFK Depart: 12:45p Arrive: 2:55p CR9
JFK-CDG Depart: 8:00p Arrive: 10:24p CR9

JFK-CVG isn't really an O&D route, its meant to provide connectivity to key departure and arrival banks at JFK. Much of the secondary European flying is suspended for the winter so those connections are reduced during this period. Many of the same connections can easily be had over DTW, ATL, or CDG.

Do you honestly think this route is safe? I mean a lot of Euro connections are at JFK but MEM has/is losing it's JFK connections.

Is ZK exiting from ABQ completely with these deletions?

Correct! Clovis, NM will now get service from DEN through Santa Fe, NM. Santa Fe will get new service to DEN and Clovis passengers will clear TSA security in Santa Fe. It also means ZK does not need to dedicate an entire aircraft to the ABQ system!

This has been in the works for a while now, so glad to see it's finally happening!

I am assuming this is subject to government approval, or did I miss a quick approval right after the application was submitted?

I thought I saw a thread a while ago that said it got approval?

Looks like it got government approval.

UA EWR-SJU JAN 1.1>1.3

This is interesting. I had no idea UA had cut EWR-SJU so much. There was a time when CO had several flights a day on EWR-SJU, along with AA (some on AB6). Has the market just evaporated?

Yes, DL is not going to be cutting CVG-JFK. That route is safe, at least for the connecting traffic to international flights.
MEM is a smaller market that does not generate as much international traffic. In addition, the MEM-JFK flight over-flies ATL and is a much longer flight than CVG-JFK. MEM-JFK is only suspended now for the Jan-Feb, coming back in March.

DL still maintains flights to JFK from places like CLE, PIT, BNA, CHS, etc. so CVG is still is going to retain this flight going forward.

DL applied for the additional China frequencies immediately after the announcement. At that point it was really a formality and paperwork, as there were plenty of un-used China frequencies. It was likely granted quickly with little fan-fare.

   Its indeed a large market.

Matter of fact the LA basin is SLCs largest domestic market with some 2,500 daily passengers.

DOT gave its stamp 3 days later. Lots of unused US-China frequencies at the moment.

Well...B6 I would assume dominates the NYC-Puerto Rico market.

I do think CVG-CDG is safe in the Summer, at least. CVG is a stronger market than MEM for business traffic. If fuel shoots up or the Euro goes away then all bets are off, however.

FYI, it is basically illegal to sell flights "subject to govt approval" any more, UNLESS the govt referenced refers to a foreign govt. It is legal to sell STGA after getting U.S. approval, but without foreign approval.
