TLC Show Miami 24/7 - Air Force One 757

Wed Oct 24, 2012 5:06 am

I was watching the new TLC show Miami 24/7 tonight and they showed Obama flying into Miami on a 757. I believe it was a Boeing C-32 that is often used by the Vice President or Mrs. Obama. I know sometimes these shows do cut shots that end up showing the wrong plane in some situations but this looked legit. You can actually see The President getting off and back on the aircraft, though I didn't catch the tail number.

The only reason that I can figure this would be the case is if The President was coming from or going to an airfield that couldn't handle the 747. Is there any other reason that he would not take one of the two 747's?

Also, I know they did some major upgrades on the 747s after the 9/11 attacks. Do you think that the C-32 has all the same bells and whistles in case an emergency situation were to come up?

I was wondering the same thing. I remember that Bill Clinton used a USAF DC-9, when he went for his summer vacations on Cape Cod. Clearly, they had to use a smaller plane on what is a relatively short flight from Andrews AFB to eastern Massachusetts.

I also noticed that the C-32 had winglets. I seem to recall seeing news footage of C-32s carrying various officials of the Bush administration, and the aircraft didn't have winglets. I'm assuming that the Air Force or a contractor installed winglets in the last few years.

I doubt it. I thought that's why we had the E-4 Doomsday planes. I could be entirely wrong on that point though.

Regardless if the president is on it be it a 747 or 757 it is designated Air Force One

During the short scene where an A330 was supposed to be coming in with a hydraulic problem, they showed video of an MD-80, 757, and A320 before the brief shot of the 330 landing. They have to use a lot of filler shots in that show, and my guess is that the 757 'Air Force One' was just that - stock footage used to show a 'presidential' plane.

One smooth landing is skill. Two in a row is luck. Three in a row and someone is lying.

Like I mentioned in my original post, this looked legit. I know the airport pretty well living in Miami my whole life and you could also see the background Miami buildings. I am also familiar with many poorly filmed documentaries and cheesy pop "airline" tv that use stock and mismatched footage. This was the President arriving on a C-32 into MIA. Very cool, something you don't see every day. Anyone else have any thoughts or info?

He arrived there on Feb 23. They also visited MCO on the same trip. There's a photo of him waving from the stairs on a wire service website.

Not sure why the 757 was used rather than the 747 though.

Def. not stock footage. He absolutely got off of the 757 and boarded back onto the 757

Technically, any Air Force aircraft carrying the president is Air Force One. What we think of as Air Force One are the two 747s, numbers SAM 28000 and SAM 29000. (SAM stands for Special Air Mission).

"Air Force One" is a callsign, whereas the aircraft most people associate with it is more properly called the Boeing VC-25A. On his last two visits to MIA, however, the president has used the larger aircraft.

This is nitpicky, but Airport 24/7: Miami actually airs on the Travel Channel.

He was coming in for an energy speech. He wanted to be more economical I guess so he used the 757 which clearly uses less fuel. It must be nice to decide what plane you want to fly. I wonder if that is more his decision than the secret service and AF.

I know when he went on a "date" to NYC with the First Lady he took the G-V

As noted Air Force one is any Air Force plane the president is on. Just like Marine 1 is any marine aircraft, army 1 and coast guard or navy 1 if that ever happened.

Or 'Executive One' when the President flies civilian/commercial, which has only happened once.

There has been one Navy One. The Lockheed S-3 Viking Bush used when he landed on the USS Abraham Lincoln for his Mission Accomplished speech. I believe that's the only time the Navy One call sign has been used.

Had to be an airfield that couldn't handle a 747. Did he stop at SRQ or somewhere like that on this trip?

I remember when Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan died Clinton flew into COU on a DC-9. You could get a 757 into COU but I think they went with the DC-9 (whatever it's military designation is) to be safe.

They are showing in the previews for next week's episode it is going to be when the fuel farm blew up. That should be interesting.

I'm all for the POTUS "right-sizing" the aircraft used for short flights. Obviously the secret service signed off on it or he wouldn't be able to do so. I'm sure that if the VC-25A is needed in an emergency while the POTUS is away from Washington, it could be airborne from ADW in minutes to meet up with him wherever he is.

I go on dates all the time in my G-V. Sometimes I take my GLEX, but that's only on special occasions.

Only MIA and MCO. Not sure it was to use less fuel as someone posted upthread or if there was another reason for it.
