Aircraft With Registration Starting With "M"

Fri Oct 26, 2012 1:56 am

I recently saw several private jets in HKG wearing an unusual registration starting with "M", including a Challenger 850 with registration M-LILY. Is "M" registration only applicable to private aircraft? and what country does this registration belong to? Thanks for any info on this.

M is Isle of Man.

Some 500 aircraft are registered there.

M appears to be the prefix to aircraft registered in the Isle of Man

See here for a nice list:

It should be for all aircraft regardless of type registered there

I've seen some rather large private biz jets with an Isle of Man reg. A tax haven indeed.

Thanks guys, for the fast response. Aeroblogger commented that Isle of Man is a tax haven, so it would make sense for the many local super rich to register their toys here and pay a lower tax.

it is a rapidly growing prefix. It was only opened in around 2006 I think. I remember seeing my first one when there were only about 9 on the register.

Taking a lot of busines away from Bermuda (VP/Q-B), Cayman Islands (VP-C) and Aruba (P4) where many bizjets in particular are registered. Heres the link to the official website

http://www.gov.im/ded/Aircraft/

Heres a good site where you can identify the aircraft which includes deregistered aircraft too. http://www.homepages.mcb.net/bones/Manx_Register/ManxRegister.htm

Not only bizjets, but some airliners two between owners, including some Olympic A320's off the top of my head plus 737's, 757's, 767's and the largest aircraft on the register has been the A340.

Yes. I have photos of various 340s at Tarbes with M register. Ex VS & SA if I recall.

He could have that if he wanted, bit he would have to add an extra letter.

The M stands for Manx.

There's a PC12 here at RLG registered M-ADAM, which I think is quite an ironic registration. Not sure if the guy owning it is called Adam or if it's a Madame flying the bird around.

Most (all?) airliners that have been on the Isle of Man Register have been temporarily withdrawn from use, usually between leases. Here is a link to that part of the IoM Registry covering this subject. It includes photos of nine "M" registered airliners, seven in full livery:

One key point about the Isle of Man registry is that aircraft carrying an M- registration are prohibited from conducting public transport / commercial air transport flights. So airliners in commercial operation (not those between commerical operations which can be registered) and business jets operating for air charter operators can't carry M- registrations (otherwise I doubt you would see any G- registered business jets remaining on the UK register!). Those in the business seem to think the Manx registry is the best in the world (c.f. using P4-, VP-B, VP-C etc.).

The next competitor in the market will be be yet another island, Guernsey, with the 2- registry. So look for business jets registered 2-FAST, 2-QUIK, 2-MANY etc.

Actually if you inspect the full list on the register there are plenty of rippers you would be happy to have.

It is a recently new development, but Jersey is also looking to set up an aircraft registry. There was discussion with Guernsey about a joint Channel Islands registry, but I believe Guernsey is going ahead on its own now.

For small Island communities, it is a good source of additional income, bringing economic diversification and benefits in terms of support services.
