Are UA 787 Deliveries Behind Schedule?

Fri Oct 26, 2012 4:43 am

Hey all,

UA's inaugural commercial service flights on the 787 are fast approaching, only a few days away now on 04NOV. And, as far as I know, they still only have one ship on property: N20904

The current 787 schedule from 04NOV to 03DEC only needs 2 ships to run the daily flights to ORD, EWR, SFO, and LAX, given the timings. However... when is the 2nd ship due on property?? With only 10 days until the launch of commercial service flights, it seems to me that both Boeing and United are cutting it extremely close with the deliveries.

Does anyone have access to planned/estimated 787 delivery schedules, or is that sort of thing not published?? Is there a potential that UA will have to cancel or equipment swap half of their 787 flights come 04NOV??

I along with a few other reporters have talked to United about this, and they are saying they will be ready for 11/4. N20904 is going to fly AMS-IAH tomorrow. Also, 3904 will fly IAH-NRT on Saturday and NRT-IAH on Monday which should end the proving runs.

The second aircraft will be cutting it close. Boeing had some delays which is why the second aircraft is not on property.

Is the schedule a two-bird schedule? I thought it was...
I hope they iron things out, I'm on the Nov 5th LAX run!

Yes its meant to be a two airplane schedule from 4th November - in theory airplane #1 doing IAH-ORD-IAH-LAX-IAH and airplane #2 doing IAH-EWR-IAH-SFO-IAH... And yes I'm getting slightly anxious too as I'm on IAH-LAX on 5th November too...

According to:

due to bad weather, some deliveries are currently being delayed.

Check out this thread ... 787 Production/Delivery Thread Part 10 (by wilco737 Oct 5 2012 in Civil Aviation)

The next 787 for UA flew last Saturday for the first time. It seems possible that it could be delivered in time but it is cutting it close...

Anyhow, what in the sam hell could weather have to do w/delays to an airplane that is built and painted inside? It can't be proving runs right? They can run those anywhere. Amazing struggle for Boeing and the 787.

First flight can't happen in low viz or high wind situations. So it can delay delivery.

Thanks for the answers.

Can anyone ACTUALLY CONFIRM whether these aircraft are delivered as (as in, WRITTEN on the certificate above the L1 door) 787-8, 787-822, or 787-824 aircraft?
I need to know for my log, and I've seen photos on both a.net and jetp.net of all three suffixes in use. So, clearly, photographers don't know, either!

Yes, deliveries are very behind schedule. I think it is doubtful that UA will be able to operate EWR and SFO routings as early as they expected to.

UA schedule changes are updated on Friday Nights/Saturdays. By Sunday, we'll have a better idea of the story.

From what I've been told the Airworthiness Certificate will have the UAL -822 suffix versus the old CAL -824 suffix. The first batch of B-787s really are CAL aircraft but since the CAL Operating Certificate does not exist or was mergered into the United certificate. It will be flown and operated by former CAL crews based in IAH.

When you get onboard the shiny new aircraft ask if you can look at the Airworthiness Certificate. More than likely it will be mounted in the cockpit by the cockpit door not above Door 1L.

I just got this in from United regarding passengers who are already ticketed on 787 flights:

"Waiver for 787 Delivery

United's first Boeing 787 Dreamliner has officially joined the fleet, and the company is excited to inaugurate its first commercial flight with this aircraft on November 4, 2012.

While the first Dreamliner enters commercial service next month, Boeing has informed United about an unexpected delay in the delivery of the second aircraft. While many flights will continue to operate with the 787, this delay will result in some flights being operated by other aircraft.

As the North American launch carrier for the 787, United recognizes that many customers
have chosen a specific flight because of the aircraft type. In the event that a previously scheduled 787 flight is changed to another aircraft type, customers are permitted to rebook or refund their travel without penalty.

Travel agents assisting customers with these changes or refunds may do so for travel booked between November 4 and December 31, 2012. Rescheduled travel must be completed by January 31, 2013.

United apologizes for the inconvenience this may cause."

The CO certificate does still exist. It was the UA certificate # that was retired.

Not sure about the paper certificate but if you do a N number search on the FAA website N20904 its listed as a 787-8 vs N666UA which is a 767-322. Probably not conclusive but highly suggestive that Boeing has done away with customer codes on the 787.

Quoting CONTACREW (Reply 14):

Exactly CALA014A is the surviving 121 certificate which is currently registered to United Air Lines Inc - Continental Airlines.

However which customer code is used (or not used) has absolutely nothing to do with the 121 certificate.

It looks like, for the first three weeks, the plane is simply doing IAH-ORD-IAH-LAX-IAH every day.
So, for the time being, I'm in good shape, but all the other guys got hosed. Sorry, folks, I know there's a lot of disappointment over this situation.

"Posted October 26, 2012

Due to unexpected further 787 delivery delays from Boeing, some flights originally scheduled to operate with our new 787 Dreamliner during November and December will now operate with a different aircraft type.

Our first 787 is continuing with pre-certification proving runs and we expect it to enter commercial service Nov. 4 as scheduled. Our first co-worker flight remains unchanged as well. However, this year’s subsequent 787 deliveries are delayed.

This weekend United is updating SHARES and other distribution systems to reflect the different aircraft types flying in place of certain previously published 787 flying. We will begin notifying customers on the initial affected flights over the weekend and will offer them the opportunity to re-book or receive a refund. We activated a special Reservations phone number to contact for help with this situation.

We don’t expect these changes to affect any of the permanent international flights that we previously announced will start in 2013."

Any word on just how far they have slipped? To my understanding there are three aircraft (902, 905, 906) ready for flight testing in Everett, and there's been bad weather, but I didn't think that would impact it more than a few days at the most...

UA's 787 flights in to and out of IAD and EWR may also be impacted by after effects of Hurricane Sandy so you may want to check again soon before your flight.

I just cancelled my Nov 10th CLE-IAH 787. On the plus side, UAL had the forethought to set up a special desk and phone number seperate from their god-awful reservations lines. No phone trees, no confused foreign agents, in fact it barely rang once before a living person picked up the phone! If only it was always like that.

I wonder if the 787 will ever find its way back to CLE or if that was our one and only shot? Anyway, sorry to see it cancelled but I'm glad UAL recognized people were flying it just for the jet and let us opt out without a fee.

That's nice because with the Hurricane Sandy cancellations, the reservation wait times can be in the hours.

This delay apparently affects only UA 787's. Something to do with IFE, perhaps?

With they reschedule the flight? I'd guess they will. The main purpose was ramp familiarization; they'll still need to do that if only to handle diversions - and CLE sees plenty of those.

They haven't specified the reason for the UA 787 delay at this point. Several have speculated it could be related to air conditioning/electrical issues but neither UA or Boeing have confirmed.

It may have something to do with last minutes changes to the cockpit safety/security barrier controversy. See the video after the commercial assuming the link works.

This should not have any implications on airworthiness or FAA certification. It is not an FAA requirement to have such a gate in place, UA's method of using the galley service carts is acceptable.

The main purpose was ramp familiarization

Are you sure? Since that was the ONLY CLE flight I'd think that familiarizing 1 group of X number of employees would be fairly worthless. I think the main reason was employee morale.

I think the main reason is that the airplane needs a good shake down, and why fly to EBF when you have perfectly good hubs?

On the plus side, it's a brand new type so the airplanes will still need broken in, but they don't necessarily have to send one to CLE to do that.

And I agree, I don't think a one-time standard length turn is going to do much more than a few CBI lessons can do, and computer courses are much cheaper. Employees who need 787 training at CLE will get it, whether or not the jet actually shows up.
