Cubana's Lockheed Constellation Fleet

Mon Oct 29, 2012 4:49 pm

Cubana operated a Lockheed Constellation fleet in the 1950s. I see they had mostly Super Gs and a 1049 that ended up in Pendell Pennsylvania as a restaurant. I am curious of how many Connies did Cubana have and where did they end up after Castro took over Cuba? Did Cubana have any 049 or 749A connies.
The one that was the restaurant in Pendell is last I heard it is on static display at a Air Force Base in the state of Delaware. Non-air worthy I take it.

They did have 049s; offhand guess, no 749s.

They leased a 1049E circa 1954 and used it on the transatlantic flight; they got three 1049Gs circa 1956.

The son of one of the Cubana Connie pilots checks into this board occasionally, perhaps I can get him to chime in with more info.

It's at the AMC Museum Dover AFB Delaware. Apparently, it also served with Capital Airways.
Just accept that some days, you're the pigeon, and other days the statue

I'm not sure the 1049E was leased. It was delivered new to Cubana, one of two 1049Es ordered by Norwegian carrier Braathens-SAFE but cancelled before delivery. The other one went to Qantas. Cubana didn't keep it long, probably only intended as a stopgap while waiting for the 1049Gs.

As mentioned, that's the aircraft that became the restaurant and more recently has been restored to resemble a military C-121C for display at the Dover AFB Air Mobility Command museum.

No idea about the 1049E, except Marson's book says it was leased. (Didn't check where it went after Cubana.) Cubana had two 049s, the 1049E that they got rid of in 1956 and the three 1049Gs-- nothing else.
