Malaysian Airlines Oneworld Entry Date Announced

Mon Oct 29, 2012 9:48 pm

After successfully completing a thorough review of its readiness, Oneworld board has given clearance for Malaysian Airlines to join the group on February 1st, 2013.

Along with the date, MH has announced updates to its mileage program to better align it with equivalent Oneworld levels.

I wonder how this will work with AF's proposed growth in KUL.
Joining either Oneworld or Skyteam would work out well for MH (and KUL) I reckon

Excellent news for one world and MH - congratulations to everyone involved. So Oneworld really has an amazing set of choices on the kangaroo route now - starting with QF/EK, BA, MH, QR etc.

Things are getting confusing indeed.

- QF Sponsors MH's entry into OW
- QF stops its JV with BA (OW) and partnership with AF (ST)
- QF moves onto a partnership with EK (Unaligned)
- JQ announces a partnership with AF via Tokyo,
- AF-KL attempt to start co-operating with MH
- BA sponsors QR's entry into OW
- AF sign a partnership with EY (unaligned) and AB (OW)
- AF rumoured to want to see AB, who are part owned by EY, move from OW to ST

Soon, as things will stand initially atleast, the 3 major Gulf carriers will each have significant exposure to OW in someway, shape or form, and AF are sitting on the edges picking up pieces as they go. Messy.

It's like an airline alliance soap opera!

I think you missed the point. MH were announced as a member elect back in mid 2011. This is an announcement of their formal entry. They're not going to Skyteam and no one cares about Air France.

From your last 2 posts (including the one on AF/AB thread), we get the point you are not a big fan of Skyteam and its carriers...fine. Now, I think your comments are just not bringing any value to the discussion

The point raised by Infinit was that it seems MH could have performed well in both OW and ST alliances, though we obviously know their choice.
Also, it is a fact AF is re-opening KUL and there are ongoing discussions with MH for potential codeshares. It seems some people actually DO care about AF, and it will indeed be interesting to see the development of partnerships between airlines from different alliances.

MH still has relationships with several SkyTeam members, including AF and DL, and I remember that AMS was one of MH's rumored A380 destinations before MH announced its intention to join oneworld. There were clearly major reasons, none of which I know of(maybe that proposed QF-tie up?), for MH's decision, and I don't expect MH to cut those ties. However, I think its a bit preposterous to immediately assume that MH, QF, or anyone else for that matter will leave oneworld just because they have a few significant codeshares with other airlines. AF codeshared with QF for years and still codeshares with JL and MH; why aren't there rampant rumors about AF joining oneworld?

And EY used to have their relationship with QF.

I don't see either AF or MH leave their respective alliances but people like to    even though most of us realise it would take an awful lot more for anything to change. MH is just a more welcome subject as they've been much more back & forth on their own desicions/strategies then AF.
I believe in coincidences. Coincidences happen every day. But I don't trust coincidences.

I do wonder how much MH-CX-JL will cooperate under the OW roof.
In theory together they have a formidable South-Central-North Asia presence if they work closely.

I also now wonder once inside OW, what MH will do with its troubled North America network. LAX is down to mere 4x weekly 777 via NRT.
Personally I believe MH would be best served to connect itself with the broad CX and JL networks at their hubs to reach the Americas.
