Apple Vacations/F9 Starts BDL - PUJ

Tue Oct 30, 2012 4:19 am

Front page in the Hartford Courant this morning. There was a small ad from the Hartford Courant (front Page) today. A charter flight (Apple Vacation) will be departing from BDL to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic on every Saturday night from February 2, 2013 until April 20, 2013. What are your thoughts? Is this only the beginning for BDL? Are there any other airlines that are likely to start service out of BDL? If so to where?

I'm not sure what BDL really has to offer that you couldn't get in BOS or NYC. As much as I like BDL there just isn't really any need for much more service. You have Florida covered well, SJU by B6 and most of the major hubs across the country. I suppose a west coast flight to SFO or LAX could be in the cards. But DL couldn't make LAX work a couple years ago.

BDL and PVD for that matter used to have a lot of charters like these back before the economy tanked. CUN, AUA and PUJ stand out as previous destinations. BDL-CUN used to be a Mexicana charter back in the day. I think BDL had 3-4 destinations for these types of charters at the peak in the early 2000's
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

Based on the a mount of work they're all doing for Apple Vacations this winter, you could say that Airtran (Southwest) and Sun Country are the next USA3000 as well.

Delta still runs seasonal BDL-CUN service on Saturdays. This upcoming season it appears to be on a 737-800.

Pretty much doing charter flights is a win-win situation for the airline. Apple Vacations is the one who has to sell the tickets and loses if they don't sell enough. Regardless if the plane has 1 or 150 people the airline will still get paid so it would be foolish to turn down gaurenteed money.
