DL A332, B744 & B777 At LAX On 11/26

Wed Oct 31, 2012 1:57 am

I was looking for flights to ATL from the LA area and noticed that on 11/26 DL has following 3 heavies scheduled on domestic routes.

12:15 to ATL on a A332
13:15 to DTW on a B744
13:45 to ATL on a B772ER

These 3 are in addition to the normal widebodies we see from LAX to ATL/DTW.

Where are these 3 planes coming from?
Is there some slack in the schedule for these aircraft or are they coming in from international destinations?
Is one of them coming in from NRT?

Lastly, if all 3 happen to be on the ground (even for a few minutes) at T5, it will be some sight!

I would hazard to guess these are extra sections to move people otherwise connecting through JFK/BOS.

I am not sure what you are trying to say. What has this got to do with people connecting through JFK/BOS?

I think he means that, due to hurricane/superstorm Sandy here in NYC, they are adding extra capacity on these routes and saving people from their cancelled NYC and BOS flights, routing them through DTW and ATL. Some upgrade for those who get the 744!

This, however, would really only make sense if this were happeninf in the next week or so. JFK is slated to open sometime tomorrow, so that should be up and running in a few days. LGA, however, was completely submerged yesterday and nobody here in New York has any idea when it will reopen.

That's my guess easily.

In terms of slack in the 744 fleet, they have 1 or 2 on standby in case of an emergency. I remember they sent the 744 here to PHX in march to pick up the slack from 2 cancelled 753 flights. That was a sight to behold!

Thanks for clarifying.. I agree it makes sense only if it were happening this week or the next, not 4 weeks away

This is the schedule for November 26... almost a month after Sandy. So surely this schedule is definitely not for those affected by Sandy. Plus there is no question of accomodating passengers connecting through BOS because DL does not fly LAX-BOS

These are scheduled equipment upgrades and live repositioning flights around the busy Thanksgiving travel period.

DL did the same last year on Sunday/Monday following Thanksgiving. Note the 744 on Monday 11/26 goes ATL-LAX-DTW.

They do not have 744s on "standby in case of emergency." They do have spare capacity, that where needed they can add an additional section. It can really be any aircraft type.

I don't believe that DL has made post Thanksgiving decisions for JFK/BOS ops yet. The flights are probably to clean out what's left in LAX after the holiday and/or reposition aircraft. Look at the flights from ATL to LAX on that date...some heavy duty stuff into LAX all day (744, 2-777's , 332, plus 763's), so these are just the return flights.

So for LAX on 11/26:
Looks like the A332 is doing MSP-LAX-ATL
The 77L is doing SYD-LAX-ATL. Another 77L does NRT-LAX-NRT
The 772ER is doing ATL-LAX-ATL
The 744 does ATL-LAX-DTW

Does the A332 from HND spend an entire day resting at LAX? Does not seem right

Exactly. These have been in the schedule like this for at least the last month, and are in no way related to Sandy. Just adding extra lift for a very heavy post-holiday travel day.

The 744 flies
11/24 DTW-LAX
11/24 LAX-ATL (red-eye)

There are numerous equipment upgrades on DTW, ATL, MSP - LAX around the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
There are multiple 744 flights on 11/24-11/26, primarily on ATL-LAX, but also on DTW-LAX. This is extra capacity for the busy travel period.

The 77L on SYD-LAX-ATL is a normal rotation to position the 77L in/out of LAX to cover the NRT an SYD flights, this is ongoing and not a special upgauge for the holiday weekend.

There are multiple 777 ER equipment upgrades too over the holiday weekend.

The A332 switches between ATL and MSP depending on the day to rotate and position the A332 into LAX to fly LAX-HND. This is ongoing and not a special upgauge for the holiday weekend. 2-3 days a week it goes to MSP after the HND flight, a few days in goes to ATL, and there may be a day where it stays in LAX all day.

They wouldn't all be at T-5...one would end up at T-6.

Darn, missing the 744 by a day!

I didn't read OP thoroughly...assumed you meant today, not 11/26!
