Dunno when dismantling started on this bird, but I do know PH-KCH (ex KL) arrived at VCV on july 30th to be scrapped. A Dutch spottersite has pictures taken a day later already showing breakup in progress.

Yes, they are getting old and the values are low.

No, not all MD-11s are in the same position. You're more likely to see an MD-11F parked than scrapped, but an MD-11 without a cargo door has virtually no value now, because A. Nobody is going to spend the money to convert the very few left in passenger configuration when there are already-converted frames (with lower hours and cycles too) on the market at bargain prices, and B. the availability of second-hand 777-200s and A330s in passenger configuration hurts old MD-11 pax planes the same way those planes did when all three were still on sale at the same time new from the factory.

That said, I love watching the MD-11 in action and though I'll probably never get to ride on one, I'll miss them when they're going. Fortunately, they'll be flying as freighters for a good while yet.

This will probably start the trend of these aircraft getting scrapped. It is a dead airplane in a passenger configuration - I think KLM are the last scheduled operators of the type - besides for that I think only World Airways has 2 and that is it.

They are still prevalent in cargo operations, but that is mainly supported by FedEx. Besides for that Aeroflot Cargo, Eva Air Cargo, Centurion and China Cargo all operate them, but would expect them to phase out in the next couple years, especially given the declining lease rates of 747 kit.

Last thing to keep in mind, if the airlines have depreciated these aircraft fully, they do have an interesting part out value. Most of these aircraft are powered by the CF6-80C2 which is the engine that services a lot of the A300/A310/MD-11/747/767 fleet. Since there is still a large operating fleet of 747s and 767s there is demand for spare parts for the engines.

We all know that there are many factors involved as to when or why a particular airframe is scrapped. However, it is still an odd sight to see this MD-11 being parted out when there are still much older DC-10's still flying around.

This is the start of the final journey for trijets. I don't think anyone can resonably argue that the MD-11 was the best aircraft ever built but she was a looker! She was a bit like the A340 500/600 of her days (i.e. built in an era where widebody twins had advanced to the stage where a third enginer was no longer needed).

I will probably never get to ride on one and I will be a lesser person for it but I used to love watching these birds at SNN when World Airways used to do fuel stops there. Then we had Omni DC-10s but those are gone now too. Just an endless progression of boring A320s/B737's left.

LH Cargo still operates 18 frames and will do so for a good while longer.
Samson was a biblical tough guy, but his dad Samsonite was even more of a hard case.

I flew the MD11's a lot from Europe to Atlanta with Delta. From a passenger perspective, they were a far more comfortable ride than either the 767 or the 777.
You are 100 times more likely to catch a cold on a flight than an average person!

Hi - yes, sorry I did not make a complete list of MD-11 operators.

Of those you mentioned, do you think the airlines will put them through their next heavy check? Would the cost of the overhaul be more than the value of the aircraft? It might just be easier to start engine swapping.

World used to have a sizable MD-11 fleet, but with the recent bankruptcy of their parent company combined with the slowdown in military charters due to the withdrawal of US forces in Iraq, according to Airfleets.net they have stored 10 MD-11s this year and currently operate 6 MD-11s (4 MD-11Fs, 2 MD-11 passenger a/c). For a time there after DL started to retire their MD-11s, World leased a few of them until UPS needed them (DL had sold their MD-11s to FedEx and UPS for conversion into cargo a/c.).

Years ago when I worked for ASA and got to fly on Delta, I flew ATL-PDX-ATL a few times because they flew one flight a day with the MD-11 because PDX was their Asian gateway at the time and the flight was a tag-on leg to their flights to Japan so you got international service on a domestic flight. I definitely liked the MD-11 over the 767-200/300 and favored it (just barely) over the 777.

Where did the old VARIG MD-11's go? I know a few went to TAM until their 773's arrived, so where did they go?

How many did RG MD-11's were there...after they got rid of their 747's they were the backbone of their long haul fleet.

I flew those VARIG MD-11's often. They felt like rockets upon take off, and they also had put in a new lie-flat F that wasn't bad at all.

I only flew an MD11 once, from GIG-LHR with Varig on a red eye. For about the only time in my life I slept on a flight all night - so it must have been a good flight!

Yes, having quite recently flown an MD-11 & 77L back to back, I would say that the MD was head and shoulders better. The 77L did have a more modern "feel" to it, I guess, but if the choice is offered (and it likely won't in the future) the MD-11 still gets the nod every time. FWIW, both a/c were of 3-3-3 config.

Perhaps too this and others nearing the scarp/part out heap need major or 'D' checks that further cut their usuable value as pax a/c. I am quite sure the accountants have the numbers supporting the scarpping of this a/c and we live by their numbers, not what a/c fans like to see flying. We are seeing quickly declining numbers of DC-8's in service for financial reasons. Fuel costs are also a factor for MD-11's and like a/c too.

There are big AD's coming for the MD-11 by 2017. The days of seeing them will soon be numbered.

According to planespotters.net they operated a total of 26 different frames. They're all freighters now, I think a fair few (planespotters indicates 9) are with UPS.

I flew on a Delta L-1011 from Atlanta to Gatwick in 1982 ... great flight, on a great plane. But the L-1011, MD11 and others from that era are headed to the scrap heap.
