AI 787 @ Kftw Sat 3 Nov 2012

Sun Nov 04, 2012 12:24 pm

On Sat 3 Nov at about 1530 CDT, I was on my way to KNFW for some military duty and while cruising along North Loop I-820 (at about 103 ft/sec), I noticed at Meacham Field KFTW an Air India 787. It was in front of the hangar that works on the private 763 of that uber-rich Russian guy (the plane that has various brown stripes and the "Raccoon" look with the black around the cockpit windows).

On my way home from the base, I passed KFTW and again noticed the AI 787. Even though it was about 0420 CST, I could make out the shape of the vertical stab and I could see the dihedral of the wing. Even the wingtips were noticeable from maybe 1/2 mile away. The maintenance hangar doors were wide open and all the lights were on, so the silhouette of the aircraft this morning was unmistakeable. Plus, there was very little traffic so I could look over at the airfield without fear of hitting another car!

The CHS produced 787s get painted by Leading Edge at KFTW.

yeah Charleston frames and some from Everett even, there seems to be a shortage of paint hangars in Washington? Must be a decent business to paint aircraft?

Paint hangers are hugely capital intensive. Everett hasn't built a new one since the 777, as far as I know. They use additional paint hangers (for widebodies) at Portland and Fort Worth.

Yep, if you can meet OEM spec. But not that many paint hangers can do that at rate.

Perhaps a little off-topic, but I believe you are referring to Mr. Roman Abramovich's aircraft, P4-MES, aka "The Bandit."

The hangar was sold to Leading Edge and turned into a paint hall. The first aircraft painted there was a UA 747 back from lease to Atlas. I don't have the registration handy, but it is the one now flying around with the United Airlines Charter livery/

Leading Edge doesn't have enough ramp or hangar space to work on two 787s. They could conceivably park one elsewhere on airport property but there isn't a lot of spare parking space large enough to accommodate an aircraft that size.
