Beat me to it by a few minutes! Anyway, what's the story with UA's first 787? I don't think it will be a regular on ORD-IAH, correct? This is probably a showcase flight, but what cities will this bird most likely service?

I believe the routing is IAH-ORD-IAH-LAX-IAH for this week until Friday that is When it's SFO instead of LAX. I will be on the IAH-SFO flight this Friday! SO EXCITED!

Does anybody know what runway this flight will come in on at ORD? I hope it's 28/10.

She flew up to ORD at FL410. The Boeing 787 is certified to 45,000 ft and with all that wing and low gross take-off weights on these domestic routes, I wonder if the United crews will fly her higher than 410. Certainly the higher cabin pressurization differential is up to it.

Anyway, what's the story with UA's first 787?

Once UA gets the second 787 on-site, they'll be running two W-routes for a few weeks to get crews accustomed to the aircraft and show it off. One airframe will so IAH-ORD-IAH-LAX-IAH daily and the other will do IAH-EWR-IAH-SFO-IAH daily. Once they get the third on-site and are ready to start international routes, the domestic flights will end.

If you track the flights by the tail number, the correct aircraft type is listed:

I was on the flight in Economy Class, just a couple of rows back from Jeff Smisek who was also in Economy.

There was a great atmosphere on board with lots of aviation enthusiasts and folk from the industry. The flight was extremely smooth, and the impression inside was of a short A330 with better overhead bins. There were several negative comments about the window dimmers which are VERY slow to activate, don't dim the windows completely, and when the dimmer switch is activated it dims pairs of windows, not just the single window where the control switch is located.

We were given some nice souvenir certificates, but no food (normal United Economy snacks for sale etc).

Upon arrival at ORD there was a water canon salute as we came into the gate.

Definitely a flight to remember.

I wonder. You hardly see domestic flights that high anyways, because above FL390 (IIRC), one flight crewmember is required by FAA regs to be wearing an oxygen mask at all times. The practical reason is because if you have a rapid decompression at that altitude, the time of useful consciousness is a matter of seconds, and they want someone conscious to initiate the emergency descent.

Before anyone from overseas pipes up, I know that this is only an FAA reg, and it is only applicable to N-registered aircraft...

Above FL410 is where one crewmember has to have O2 on at all times. I had the 757 up to FL420 a couple times and one guy in the flight deck has to have the mask on. Not exactly fun!

That's part of the customer-specific cabin configuration. If United has it set up that way, it's because they asked Boeing to do that. Any sets of windows can be ganged together so that all the windows for a given seat move together. This is especially important in biz class where, otherwise, you'd have to get out of your seat to adjust 2 or 3 windows (as you have to do with manual shades). But there's no reason not to do it in economy class if they've got a layout with two windows per row.

Quoting Atlflyer (Reply 17):
So are there window dimmers at every OTHER window and not under every individual window?

No, every window has a dimmer. Part of the cabin configuration is to gang windows together per the customer's request so that one dimmer may manipulate multiple windows (any dimmer switch in the set will move all windows in the set).

It was an amazing flight. I was in row 17 right across the aisle from Smisek, that was very unexpected.

I was actually more impressed with the window dimmers than a lot of other people. I love looking out the window but with the sun shining directly in that's nearly impossible on other aircraft. Setting the dimmer to the middle was perfect, took the glare off and still had a great view of that incredible wing. It did take a while to get dark when you set it there and it wouldn't get totally dark, but seemed more than adequate for sleeping. It should be just fine on a long international flight where you'd only be adjusting the settings once or twice in flight.
The darkness level is set by the customer and I believe is essentially just a software thing. Smisek was talking about the debate going on about how dark they should get and said he'd like them to get as dark as possible.
I believe that only rows with 2 windows had the dimmers synced up. My row only had one window and the dimmer only controlled that one window.

The window dimmers may not be perfect but I'd choose them every time over a window shade.

I was amused when we landed in ORD and Jeff Smisek pointed at an American 763 and called it a relic. I wonder if he feels the same way about the 21 year old UA 763 I flew to Houston on the day before.

Overall it's an incredible plane. Economy is still a bit cramped but that seems to be the case no matter who you fly anymore. Everything else (IFE, luggage bins, lighting, general feeling of openness) was top notch. Can't wait until they have 787's flying throughout the system.

Smisek may have called the AA 763 a relic, but does he realize half of them will be retired starting 2014? And AA is introducing a FAR superior Business Class seat on the new 77Ws being delivered.

Why did UA introduce the 787 with such an outdated Business Class?

Clearly they didn't feel a total redesign/revamp of the biz class was necessary at this point. The aircraft itself is a game changer and they are focused on the efficient nature of the aircraft itself.

Interesting. Even DL's new Business Class seat for its 763 "relics" is a better product than this seat. I don't disagree, the 763 is an old battle axe now, but I think passengers do care about seat comfort and privacy on longer flights, which the UA 787s will be flying. Passengers are less interested in whether the plane is made of plastic composites or aluminum.

It was an off the cuff remark. He knows AA is getting 787's but flying the 787 that day certainly did make everything else feel like old technology (because it is).

Not sure about the biz class, I haven't flown enough in business to really compare it to much else but it looked pretty good. Lie flat seat, huge TV screen and an excellent IFE system. I wouldn't want to be climbing over the aisle seat if I had a window but other than that it seemed like a very nice place to spend several hours.

I know it's not the latest and greatest but seems more than adequate for a long flight. Plus they can get 6 across in the 787 vs 4 across on DL and AA 777's. Are AA and DL able to charge enough of a premium to pay for the extra space the seats take up?

AA and DL aren't using more space to give the passengers more room, they just make better use of the space. For example, on the new AA 77W, the seats are not completely forward facing, they're on a slight angle which allows them to be lie-flat in a 1-2-1 configuration. Having tried out the new AA seats last month for 777W training, I'm sure people are going to love them, lots of new features!

The pmCO business seats are also angled, but on the 787 they are in a 2-2-2 configuration, and on pmUA they manage to fit 2-4-2 in business and 1-2-1 in first on a 777. How does this "better use of space" account for the loss of one seat per row in a business class product?

Got it. Is there anywhere to find out the number of square feet each business class seat takes up? It's so hard to tell how much space they actually take up just by looking at seat maps.

There's no doubt that the UA biz seats are a few years out of date (probably because of the 787 delays) but they certainly seem good enough to compete with all but the latest offerings on AA and DL.

Personally I don't mind the UA J class product. Maybe I just don't leave my seat that often, but the person next to me was only fully reclined for about 3 hours, when we were both asleep anyway.

But anyway, nobody is paying more to buy DL's product over UA's because of seat assignments. It all comes down to route network, FF program, even price (my company lets me fly J, but I still have to choose the cheapest one!).

I do imagine the 787 will definitely get more people on board than seat arrangement due to the wow factor. I personally always choose a 777 flight over a 767 flight because I think the 767 feels cramped. If the 787 feels roomier like people say it does (I'll know for sure on Wednesday!) then I'd choose a 787 over 767, regardless of seat arrangement.

I really don't think they're that superior. I've flown them on CX. I slept most of the way so I can't say much about it but I can say for certain I wouldn't choose AA over UA because of it.

Too bad AA is putting in 10 abreast Y in their 77W. Kind of takes any sails out of the wind in their new biz class product.

It's definitely roomier than the 767, more like an A330 than 767. Unfortunately it's 9 across in Y unlike the 8 across on most A330's but still felt much roomier than the 767.
Enjoy your flight on Wednesday! It's a great aircraft, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Well, it must been a pretty good seat if you were able to sleep most of the way to/from HKG!

Personally, I sleep better without a stranger (snoring, coughing, etc. etc.) next to me. It's so much nicer to travel in a seat by itself if you're not flying with someone. Having flown as a passenger in AA's First Class suite and in Business Class with a person next to me, I'd far rather be in First! The new AA J seat and DL's being installed now allow you to be alone, so if I were a passenger and had the choice, I would choose that over a 787 with a passenger next to me. Maybe I'm anti-social when it comes to flying.

Quoting Dalavia (Reply 12):
and when the dimmer switch is activated it dims pairs of windows, not just the single window where the control switch is located.

That seems like a strange set-up to ask for:

I was pretty impressed by how dark the dimmers got since I had seen compaints about them. I was thinking it was dark out already until I looked up a few rows. Frustrating to have an aisle seat on the backside of that beautiful wing only to have the guy IN the window seat have full dim on the window the entire flight!

Mean wing, gotta see it in action!:

These first reports have me pretty excited for December. I have a pair of 787 window seats booked on a trip to IAH. Those dimmers look neat. Can't wait to see that crazy wing out of those huge windows!
