It's a rule for a reason. Depending on the person, after being awake for 20-24 hours your reactions are the same as if you were legally drunk.
You want to hear a stupid rule? Under Part 121 Supplemental flying, there is no duty day at all or required rest period for flying outside the lower 48. Just don't fly over 12 hours in any 24 hour period. Many cargo carriers fall under this type of flying. A lot of people that don't understand will say "well it's cargo, not people" It's not a good argument.
It seems that the stop in BOS
for a crew swap is perfect for getting the trip done with minimal delay under the circumstances.
