MX delay out of DXB causing crew to time out. Entire crew needed to be replaced. New crews flight from ATL was delayed 2 hours (DL800) which further delayed DL7 out of BOS.

I know this is common across the industry but a diversion due to "crew timing out" has to be one of the stupidest rules ever invented.

Well, do you want your crew on duty for more than 16 hrs? I don't fly across the ponds, but I have worked a 16 hr day, and i can say without a doubt I was fatigued at the end of the day and my judgement/reactions weren't as sharp. Now you want the crew to just continue? How long is too long? 18, 20 hrs?
