FedEx plane crashes south of Wichita Mid-Continent Airport; Lawrence man dead - KansasCity.com

Sedgwick County and Wichita emergency workers investigate the scene of a plane crash near a hedge row north of 47th Street South and west of Tyler Road on Tuesday morning, Nov. 6, 2012. Authorities said a Cessna Caravan with FedEx markings had left Wichita Mid-Continent Airport on Tuesday morning and was returning to the airport with the pilot reporting mechanical difficulties. The pilot was killed in the accident.

The crash was reported at 7:46 a.m. in the 9800 block of West 47th Street South, according to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

The 1991 single-engine turbo prop Cessna Caravan experienced mechanical problems shortly after lifting off, Capt. Annette Haga said, and the pilot was in the process of turning around to return to the airport when the plane went down and came to rest in a tree row north of 47th Street South between Maize and Tyler.

The plane “had apparently landed prior to hitting the tree row but did collide with the tree row,” Haga said in a media briefing near the scene of the crash. “There is not debris through the field.”

While there was a report of a fire in the area of the crash at the time the plane went down, Haga said, “we do not have an engulfed airplane.”

The pilot was the sole occupant aboard the plane, Haga said.

“It did have cargo on board, but I have no idea how much,” she said.

The Federal Aviation Administration is on scene investigating the crash.

Well that probably sealed his fate right there.

I looked at the flightaware flight tracker on the flight and it looked like he circled ICT a couple of times before landing. Boy I wish he had landed as soon as he spotted trouble.

Guess this is the flight here,

Don't see any circling on this track.

According the the news story, the pilot reported engine problems and his windshield had oil on it that was hindering his visibility. He stated he was going down in a field.

Terrible situation and outcome.

Wow! I'm not sure how I missed this in the news today. May the pilot rest in peace.

I wonder how Cessna will be involved in the investigation. The Caravan is built at the Wichita (ICT) airport.

Tragic. This was not deemed news worthy in the PHL area. Prayers to family and friends.

From the About FedEx › FedEx Express page, link below:

http://about.van.fedex.com/fedex_express

FedEx lists in the aircraft fleet inventory a total of 244 Cessna 208Bs.

As one could possibly conclude from above comments, their has been some attrition of 208s along the way.

IIRC, from fuzzy memory, their were several 208As (early deliveries) but mostly 208Bs; maybe just over 300 total at one time.

Can someone improve on the totals situation, attrition numbers, and any other factual information on this fleet.

And may the crew member's family gather the strength to deal with this unfortunate incident. R.I.P.

Fedex also takes delivery of new ones once in a while. Some of the 208s are among the newest planes Fedex owns.

Cessna's accident investigators were on site shortly after the crash. Their offices are 2 miles from the crash site. The Caravan production building is less than 3 miles from the crash site.
