US Airways Express CRJ-700/900's @ PHL?

Wed Nov 07, 2012 3:38 am

Sorry if this belongs in another thread, mods please move if it is.

I was flying through PHL this afternoon and noticed that, while waiting for my Dash 8-100 to take me to ISP, all I saw on the regional front was CRJ-200s, Dash 8-100s, ONE Dash 8-300, and ONE E-145. Does US Airways operate CRJ-700s and/or CRJ-900s into PHL at all? Or is it like the E-190s at CLT (once or twice a day on certain days)?

Any info is greatly appreciated!

To my knowledge there are no US -700's or -900's flown into PHL. That may change in the future when the construction on Terminal F is completed, as there has been talk of larger regional aircraft parking on the Express gates.
Every flight counts.

Why is that, though? It seems that a large market like PHL with lots of TATL and international flights should have some two-class planes on regional markets (not served with the E-170/190)

As I recall, it has to do with where they base crews on the Express side for efficiency purposes. This class of aircraft is handled by the E70/75/90 in PHL so there's no real need to put the CR7/CR9 into PHL just for more capacity if there's no other compelling reason to do so.

Doesn't that answer the question? US will send the 170/175/190 to any city it feels needs 2 class service. That seems easier and more cost effective than trying to rotate PSA/Mesa aircraft through an additional hub just to feed TA flights when that could be done with the 170/175.

Keep in mind that PSA only operates 14 CRJ-700s so I doubt there's a ton of flack in that schedule out of CLT.

This has been the case since US* got CR7s and 170s. 170s operated ex-PHL and CR7s ex-CLT. When Midatlantic was around, CLT got basically no E-jets. That has changed with YX's arrival and the corresponding increase of the size of the fleet, but as far as 90 seaters, it's still CR9s in CLT and E90s in PHL, just as it has been since the merger.

The "why" is a more interesting question. I believe it had to do with the desire to use a 70 seat jet on PHL-IAH/DFW and those being really long flights for the CR7.

It seems like DCA is like that too - I can't recall the last time I saw a CR7 or CR9 from US there, but there obviously is plenty of large RJ demand with the boatload of E-Jets moving through.

The primary reason for DC not getting bigger than the RJ2 is gate size. All of those parking spots out there in commuter world are too small for RJ7s and 9s; there wouldn't be enough clearance to get in and out of the other gates. The one potential for getting a 7 or 9 to DCA now is on gate 35, where they are using the jetway for CRJs.

There is a storm moving into the NE, I wonder if they are there in the event of the storm.

PHL does not have any CRJ-700/900 service or Dash 8-300 service for US. The 700's and 900's do serve some northern cities i.e. AVP MDT ABE but it is all service to CLT.

When they reconfigured the Gate 35 remote parking spots they put CR7/CR9 dashes on the J-Line, I think its just that right now they would rather keep the lift in CLT
