Russia, Cuba To Establish Joint Airline

Fri Nov 09, 2012 3:11 am

http://atwonline.com/airline-finance...+AtwDailyNews+%28ATW+Daily+News%29

"According to the report, the carrier will create additional connections between Russia and Cuba and link Russia with other countries in Latin America and Caribbean countries via a new established hub in Havana. The head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Denis Manturov, said the traffic from Russia to Cuba is growing every year. In 2011, 80,000 Russian citizens visited the island. Russia currently does not have direct connections with most Latin American countries and passengers need make two or three transfers to travel there."

Interesting.......I assume the airline won't ever get approval to fly to the U.S.

So basically, they're gonna funnel a ton of passengers from Russia through HAV and then to Latin America? Strange, wonder how it will work

Is there any other airline that does something similar? (assuming I have the premise down correctly)
Ironically I have never flown a Delta MD-90 :)

AA funnels passengers between Europe and Latin America via MIA.

I meant more of a concentrated funnel. It seems like it's gonna be a few Russian spokes on one end and a bunch of Latin American spokes on the other. Usually for hubs I see a good amount of spokes on both ends, not something so lopsided, if that makes sense

Well, if it is a Russian airline it might have greater chances of getting an approval.

Will this new airline absorb Cubana or...?

I second that! Ironic, too...on the same day I received my 1:400 Cubana Il-96 Gemini Jet.

Although I would be cautiously skeptical about seeing this come to fruition since it is still in the investigative stages and does not appear to be a sure thing, at the moment.

What would be the economic or logistical advantage to this new airline, versus Aeroflot and Cubana simply intensifying code-shares in and out of Havana? Or perhaps Aeroflot could make Havana a focus city to Latin America in exchange for discounted aircraft sales to Cubana? That would seem to make more sense to me, as it would give Aeroflot a footing into Latin America, provide Cubana with significantly-discounted aircraft, and boost Russian aircraft production.

I guess time will tell.

How about Delta at NRT?

In any case, I think the second point of this new airline is to also provide additional connections between Cuba and Latin America - I would be very surprised if the new airline didn't have fifth freedom rights.

Oh, and don't forget that Cuba has scrapped its cumbersome system of exit visas for its citizens, so Cubans can now travel more freely too.
Public service announcement: "It's" = "it is". To indicate posession, write "its." Looks wrong, but it's correct grammar

I'm curious to read more news about this project even if, at the moment, I'm not sure it will become true... as in two posts before: time will tell about it.

Double connections would have a hard time there, I guess flying via MAD or other European gateways will be a lot more convenient for people travelling from HEL or other European cities. Obviously if the airline would be a Cuban carrier getting traffic rights between Cuba and Europe that would be well managed, that would be a different story, but Cuba is most probably a bit too far north except for connections to the Caribbean and Central, Northern Latin America.
