Status Of EK A343s And Other 'old Types'?

Fri Nov 09, 2012 5:40 am

I'm trying to make sure I understand what is happening with EK's A340-300s. I know they are being retired, but it seems that every time I have my mind around when EK will return these to the leasors (who bought the leases anyway?), they stick around just a bit longer. Looking at wikipedia, it seems as if only 6 of the 8 are still in the fleet. Is that accurate? Have two been returned? Or has EK extended leases on the A343s?

Earlier this year, destinations were noting their final A343 dates due to the fleet draw down. Is there any hint on the final EK A343 flight schedule? 28 February 2013 would be the earliest (versus earlier reports of a complete phase out in 2012):
http://airlineroute.net/2012/03/29/ek-343final-update1/

http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-ne...carriers-increasingly-turn-leasing
“[Average] fleet age will gradually reduce to around 5.1 years in 2017, further improving the already industry-leading fuel efficiency of the Emirates fleet,” said Brian Jeffrey, senior vice president for corporate treasury.

This to me implies EK will be accelerating the retirement of older types. IIRC, the 773s (non 77W) have their leases expire in 2014. Is that correct? I would expect the 772/77E to leave the fleet around the same time with continued slow attrition of the A332s when there is a chance for opportunistic sales as replacement aircraft roll into the fleet.

That leaves only the A340-500s to discuss. Those circa 2003/2004 aircraft have to be coming due for extensive maintenance. Since they are not flying ULH, I would speculate they are worth more as parts for the A333 fleet. Since the last link notes the older types will be out of the fleet by 2017, I would expect the A345s to exit in 2014/2015 with A359 deliveries right before heavy maintenance is performed. However, I have to ask what their fate is going to be as EK has surprised me by keeping around some types longer than I thought they would (while selling off A332s... which only confuses me).

With the A359, I expect to see a future EK fleet in the 2017 to 2020 time frame to include:
A359
A350-1000
777W/778X/779X
A388/A389

IIRC, A6-ERQ and A6-ERR have now left the fleet. A6-ERQ is now CS-TQY and A6-ERR is now CS-TQZ, operated by Portuguese charter company Hifly.

They are still active as of today with EK:
A6-ERQ is on EK 107 DXB - MLA via LCA
A6-ERR is on EK 135 DXB - VCE

On another note 5 A330-243 have left the fleet:
A6-EAB - to Virgin Australia as VH-XFA
A6-EAC - to Virgin Australia as VH-XFB
A6-EAL - to Sichuan Airlines as B-5907
A6-EAN - stored in LDE
A6-EKZ - stored in Bordeaux
A6-EAA due to leave December 2012

Also there is news that at least 1 B777-21HER from 1998 (A6-EMK or A6-EML has had a lease signed to keep it in the fleet until 2017)

If those 343s are in good shape SK could need some? SKs are quite old now? And finances are in the trash can.

Sometimes a little research is a nice thing

EK's 340-300 are all 1996-1998 models, delivered to Singapore, before Boeing bought them as part of their 777-deal.

SK's are all from 2001-2002 and significant newer.

That's interesting. I had previously read that CS-TQY (190 ex A6-ERQ) was due for delivery in September and CS-TQZ (202 ex A6-ERR)followed in October. What was the hold-up? Did the deal fall through?

Additional information on the two A343s that I thought had already left EK is posted on Hifly's website. I see that the EIS for both is now given as 2013.

EKs A343-leases expire at different dates. But as you ask for old types, they have many old 777s. And as they are planning to replace the first 77Ws by 2016 or 2017 (announced at the last order), the 773s and 772s likely wont last as long.

They are looking to renew leases on some frames as the renewal rates are quite low,

Also it helps that the 343 have a better Y and J product than the 332s,

and an older version of ICE

Thank you. That implies EK will remove them from the fleet, but not quite yet.

For how long? I can understand with their current aircraft shortage a 2 or 3 year extension, but not anything going past 5 years. So it sounds like they will keep the planes a little longer.

One of my links has 2017.

But if the 773 leases expire in 2014, there is a cost benefit to keeping the 772s and 77Es until 'around then.' I agree with you that these won't last as long. But since one 777-21H ER has a longer lease, it might be worth it (at the right lease rates) to extend the leases until the 2016 time frame.

That surprised me. I wonder why EK extended the lease so far...

I expect EK's current 20-frame A350-1000 order to be used to replace the 777-200, 777-200ER and 777-300 long-term, with the 777-300ER possibly being used in the interim (or EK will extend the leases).

The A330-200, A340-300 and A340-500 fleet will likely be replaced by the A350-900s as they arrive. Again, EK might sub in 777-300ERs in the interim.

It will be interesting to see how EK meets their expansion needs while maintaining a low CASM.

Now, in a few years, we should have a thread on the 77Ws. When EK starts rotating out the type, it will impact that resale market. Which begs the question, "When will we see a 777BCF?" It isn't needed yet, but sometime between now and 2020 one will be needed.
