B6 Pilot Osbon To Be Freed From Jail

Fri Nov 09, 2012 6:39 pm

Looks like B6 pilot Osbon will be released from jail soon. No word if he will fly again but a part if the release order states he his not allowed to be on or around commercial aircraft and not allowed to communicate with the pax that he had his meltdown on.

The article also stated that his freak episode was caused by sleep deprivation. Not sure yet if I buy that argument. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity. I'm surprised they're releasing Osbon so soon.

Could be "temporary insanity" or some such defense. I'm no lawyer, but that is what it sounds like.

It's more likely he'll be struck by lightning than ever getting a first-class medical.

This was by all accounts a good guy -- indeed a well-regarded guy at B6 -- whose circuits went haywire.

Whether it was sleep deprivation or not, we'll probably never really know. Assuming that it is, we aren't talking about not getting a good night's rest; to bring on this level of psychosis, we're talking about being up for days and days straight. Early in my career, I was good for 36 hours without too much degradation of my reasoning ability, but by the morning of the second day, I would usually have a little trouble maintaining a clear line of thought, unless I was just completely-adrenalined-out. A little catnap for an hour here and there made a world of difference. Young doctors, who do find ways to get those catnaps, will pull 48 hours on no problem. It's a personal thing, of course, but it's hard to imagine that this guy wasn't well beyond that to become completely-detached from reality.

And this then raises questions about judgment, responsibility, etc. that are or should be career-enders. Which is really too bad. I hope he is able to get a lot of counseling to retool himself for what hopefully will be a fulfilling life outside what was his lifelong path.

Lawyers are damn good at deferring blame!

I know we are given psych evals and while you arent even for a 3rd class, I do recall being asked if you have ever been charged with a crime and I cant imagine a flight surgeon who would sign off no matter the legal maneuvering.

I agree and thats likely why he was released from jail. I certainly wouldnt want him flying my plane and understand temporary lapses in sanity/judgement, that alone shouldnt be enough to keep him in jail for a long time.

The thread title is not accurate. Captain Osbon was not imprisoned or jailed after being found not guilty by reason of insanity. Rather, he was sent to a mental health facility in Ft. Worth for treatment. After a recent psychological evaluation in North Carolina, the federal court ordered him released with various conditions.

The article states that a friend, who still works for JetBlue, is driving Captain Osbon back to his home. I find that touching and an indication that this man has some folks who will help him get back on his feet. I wish this pilot success in his new endeavors.

Ummm... not known if he will fly but he is not allowed on commercial aircraft? That rather limits his future employer field.

Agreed, but keep him off commercial aircraft. He will have to find a new profession.

He was still in Federal custody, hence he's still "locked up". The thread title is fine. It's still considered as being in jail.

That's very likely but we don't know that yet.

I don't think the lawyers here are deferring blame.....at all.

According to the article I provided, his psych eval is sealed by the court, so if he's asked about his mental health, he doesn't have to disclose it I don't think. Now, if they were not sealed by the court, then he would need to disclose his health records.
