Rihanna To Charter A 777 For Her "777 Tour!"

Mon Nov 12, 2012 8:46 pm

"I am so excited about the 777 Tour," said Rihanna. "We are turning this jumbo jet into our tour bus. We're practically living on this thing for a week: sleeping, partying, all together. Me, my fans, the press...it's going to be a wild ride. I wanted it to be a rock n' roll adventure, and I think when it's over it will be the coolest thing I've ever done. I'm that excited about it."

Sponsored by HTC Corporation and co-sponsored in the UK by River Island and in Paris by Microsoft, the "777" tour will take a group of die-hard fans and a traveling international press corps of over 150 journalists representing 82 countries, aboard a chartered Boeing 777 twinjet to 7 concerts in 7 days in 7 countries. The "777" tour will host an intimate gig in each of 7 cities in 7 different countries.

I'm guessing it could be the Omni 777. That's used for charters often.

It would have been far more interesting if it was 7 continents, but I guess there's no 777 capable of landing in Antarctica to give the penguins a concert.

It's been done before with Iron Maiden and with a hell of a lot more class.

They don't even go to Asia and only 2 continents. Maiden hit 6 continents in the Flight 666 tour starting in Europe, going to India, Japan then Australia then to LA down to Mexico City, Central America and South America before back to NY and Toronto before heading back to Europe

She is going to be fighting fatigue/jet lag going from performing in Toronto one night then having Stockholm the next night.

The difference between Maiden and Rihanna is that Rihanna isn't driving the plane.

I would think they'll depart late at night from YYZ (subject to curfew - perhaps they can get an excemption if there is one) and fly overnight. Stockholm is a good choice to touch down in Europe cos it's a small, low-key city without lots of media, so demands on the artist during the day will be slight. She can get some sleep on the plane over - at least 1x four hour cycle - then land and go straight to a hotel and sleep for another four hour cycle, emerge about 6pm for soundcheck then have a few hours to do press / socialise etc before the gig. No fatigue issues there at all. Quite a nice schedule actually. Will be interesting to see what the actual times are for the flight - but that's my guess. Dep YYZ 2345 arr ARN 1330.

Completely Agree, real musicians are an extinct breed, all we have now are performers (if you can call them that), the era of true artists is long gone.

Not true at all. There are still plenty of great musicians around, they just aren't in the foreground as much as they once were compared to the "performers".

Quoting AirframeAS (Reply 9):

Have you seen how much concert tickets go for these days? Hint: it's insane.

Let's say the average ticket is $150, and that the average venue is going to hold 8,000 fans (that's on the low-end for a tour like this). That means revenue is $1.2M per show, multiplied by 7 shows is $8.4M.

She'll have no problem chartering this 777 for a week. Tough life eh?

While that may be true, not much left over after she's paid for the venue costs, taxes, band payroll, etc etc..... That's a lot if money.

But priceless in terms of getting the media talking about it (i.e. free advertising).

I'm guessing that the average demographic of ANet doesn't exactly fall within Rihanna's target audience, yet it is being discussed. Just wait until the gossip pages get hold of it...

Probably HTC, River Island and Microsoft in return for having logos plastered over it...

With Maiden they worked out that it was cheaper to charter then to use commercial for what they wanted to do, and with everything (gear, band, crew) travelling together they could fit in more shows in less time..

The biggest problem is the 7 days restriction. This schedule is tough enough to keep as it is. If you add in a longhaul flight every night and time zone changes, it gets a lot harder to pull it off.

Little do you know.......    Google Bruce, Flight 666, etc. and watch some of the behind the scenes youtube footage from both the somewhere back in time and final frontier tours and then make a judgement on whether or not you consider Maiden 'classy.' At the very least as an airline enthusiast, you've got to admit that Bruce the rockstar-pilot is interesting!

Both are SO true! There are plenty of good musicians still out there, but you have to go to a club or smaller venue to see them. The era of new stadium/arena acts that are actually great musicians has sadly passed (though I'm still holding out for a revival!).

Back to topic, have there been any flight plans filed for this aircraft? Curious to see the schedule they are using to operate the flight. Seems very aggressive, especially if they are carrying gear in the cargo hold. Does Rhianna and her 'band' even have gear?

Okay Im asking for trouble here, but much more impressive was the Back Street Boys around the world tour in 100 hrs...they took in Japan, Australia, South Africa, South America and NYC in less then 5 days...Much more impressive...If you can tolerate the band there is a great video that documents that trip on the 767....

Unfortunately real musicians are no longer radio friendly especially with Kareoke shows like American Idull being shoved down our throat.

They do exist in Europe. A band like Nightwish, which will only play a House of Blues size club in the US will sell out large arenas in Europe and Japan. Iron Maiden is one of the few talented musician bands that can sell out a large arena still in the U.S, at least since Bruce returned. I saw them in 1996 with Blayze Bayley singing for them while Bruce was doing his solo albums and getting his pilot license and Maiden was just playing large clubs. As soon as Bruce and Adrian returned they were back to playing large outdoor shows and arenas.

It is us Americans who have a bad taste in music that we pick performers over musicians, where very few performers now could even write a measure of music.

Not only that but he also is a champion fencer and a business owner - opening or has opened a large aircraft maintenance facility in Wales. He is checked out on several aircraft now I believe - 737, 757, DC-3, DC-4 and I am sure many smaller planes too. I have seen videos of him flying a Tiger Moth even.

Not to interrupt a well intentioned "kids these days" rant but radio friendliness is hardly anything new, my dad tells me it was a pretty big deal when the radio started playing Led Zeppelin songs that were longer than the usual time of threeish minutes.

Rhianna is one of the highest grossing musical performers currently working, She has made several hundred million dollars in her short career, There is no question that she is not footing the bill for this, most likely her record label or promotional company is paying. I would venture to say this gimmick will help them rake in truck loads of cash. There are fans the world over of her music who can, and will pay hundreds of dollars a seat to see her perform. Not my thing, but good for her, she seems to be morally and socially responsible with her giving back from her excessive fortune.

Maybe two birds . . . my bet is that they will have two sets of stage equipment . . . one being used while the other gets dismantled and flown to the next-next venue. And if they really wanted to be sure, they would have one set sitting in some airport somewhere just in case one of the set run into trouble.

I assume that the assertion of the flight number being DL 8857 is correct, as DL usually doesn't fly nonstop between LAX and MEX, and FlightAware shows that DL 8857 flew that route today. Assuming that is true, she is flying on N862DA. It landed in MEX about 2 hours ago, according to FlightAware.

I'ma get slaughtered but I'll take a listen to Rihanna over Iron Maiden any day.

Music taste varies so to make a general statement spoken as a fact that music now is not as good as music prior is totally subjective. For me older songs just don't do it. I much rather current stuff. For some reason people think "current stuff" is only acts like Lady Gaga, One Direction, Justin Bieber but that's not true. There's plenty of brilliant current songs, you've just got to search further than the radio!

As for the 777, I think it's awesome she even matched the aircraft with the tour. :P
Neat idea.

Possibly one of the only times I've actually wanted an aircraft to go tech.

I have nothing against Rihanna, but that's a good call!

The aircraft routing is MEX-YYZ-ARN-CDG-SXF-STN-EWR, terminating at EWR on 20nov. The same ship will follow the whole way with that flight number and 12 lucky flight attendants and 3 pilots that get to follow along on the easiest rotation ever.

2 pilots did LAX-MEX... that was one rotation.

The rest of the trip is different pilots and a complete separate rotation.

The plane left about 2 1/2 hours late from MEX, wonder what happened.

I heard it was from DL.

You were right!

Will be interesting to see what the actual times are for the flight - but that's my guess. Dep YYZ 2345 arr ARN 1330.

Very close, scheduled dep 2355 and arrive ARN 1355.

She is going to be fighting fatigue/jet lag going from performing in Toronto one night then having Stockholm the next night.

Nothing some Colombian Sneezing powder can't fix...

Quoting premobrimo (Reply 42):

This is a picture of boarding the flight in MEX.

I would have expected a special livery, this is a tad normal.
