SQ To Update Long Haul 77E With New J Seats

Wed Nov 14, 2012 5:33 am

Apologies if I missed another thread about this...

SQ has announced that they will be updating the J seats in their long haul 777-200ER fleet. The entire fleet is due to be finished by next July, with the first route seeing the upgraded planes being AMS (eventually!) Y appears to be remaining as is.

Story here.

I think it's interesting that they're doing this, given that a new product is due next year. These planes will still end up having the 'old' product once the A380 and 77W fleets have been retrofitted (assuming they will be) which just brings up the existing issues of consistency all over again within a couple of years...

Still good news though.

The 772 seats in Y have a better cushion than those on the 77W, but horrible personal tv's. It does not mention whether the number of Y seats will be reduced during the update.

I find the seats on the regional 772s and 773s to be getting very soft. I find the ones on the 77W, A330, and A380 to be thinner but much firmer. For longer flights, you want a firm seat, not a soft one.

I suppose as they start to introduce the new J product on the A380s and 77Ws, they will take those seats and put them on the 772ERs so they don't go to waste. Eventually the 772ERs will be replaced with 788s, hopefully with the new product (or a hybrid... not sure if they 788 is wide enough to take the 1-2-1 config of the current "new" J).

Cheers

The service made me forget that my bum was numb doing the IAH flights on the 77W. Sitting on a couple of pillows helped a bit, but they were just a bit too firm for me. Plan on doing the same flight in January.

SIA doesn't have any 788's on order, only 789's bound for Scoot.

If the Y refit is in line with the rest of the fleet we can expect to see new seat covers (gold/beige) and larger 9" screens along with a refreshed PTV user interface (not eX2). The current Y on the 77E's I believe has 34" pitch compared to the 32" pitch on the rest of the fleet.

The refurbed 77E's will be launched 3x weekly from 12JAN and go daily from 12MAR. The following routes will be launched (in order): JNB, CPT, IST, CPH, FCO, CHC and AKL.

Edit: According to the SIA website, these aircraft will be introduced in a 26J/236Y config.
