Here's part of the news release:

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) announced today that it will inaugurate daily service from Palm Beach International Airport on Jan. 21, 2001, with 13 daily nonstop flights to four cities: Baltimore/Washington, Nashville, Orlando, and Tampa Bay. No real surprises there, seems like it was about what everyone on the board was predicting. I am somewhat surprised at the frequency of the Orlando flights. Are Delta Express and Gulfstream still operating the route ?

The press release also mentioned that Southwest would be occupying 3 gates at PBI to operate their initial schedule of 13 departures per day. Considering Southwest's quick turn-arounds, which lead to higher gate utilization, 3 gates seems kind of excessive to me.

At the old Robert Mueller airport in Austin, Southwest had 4 gates and operated 44 departures a day or 11 per gate. When the new airport opened, Southwest leased 6 gates and has added 4 new departures for a total of 48 or 8 per gate on average. (Gate 9 in AUS is the experimental dual jetway gate where passengers can board through both the front and the rear of the aircraft, and that gate handles 13 daily departures.) I know in DAL, Southwest has 14 gates and 139 daily departures or about 10 per gate.

But 3 gates for 13 departures? that's not even 5 per gate. It makes me wonder if that's an indication that Southwest will be adding additional flights in the very near future, or if it was more of a case of "We'd better get an extra gate while we can and hopefully these 3 will be adequate for the next 5 or 6 years."

I thought that part of the reason they added service at PBI (which is only about 40 miles from FLL) was the fact that they'd pretty much hit capacity at their three gates in FLL and it wasn't looking like they were going to be getting any new space soon. So an extra gate might a bit of a hedge against not being able to get it in a year or two if new carriers start serving PBI (like ATA, AirTran, etc.)

Not just that, but it's likely that they plan to add a significant number of flights from PBI over the next year or so - for example, they didn't add service to JAX, MDW, ISP - which all have non-stop service from FLL. But they can only get new aircraft so quickly from Seattle.

I'm surprised that STL didn't get service. TW is pulling off the route because of low yields, so now STL and PBI are no longer linked. STL pax will have to take WN or TW to FLL.

I found it rather odd that it is actually impossible to get from ISP-PBI, there is no possible connection, they dont even have ISP in their fare structure. I found it rather odd esp since SW is competing with Jet Blue in NY
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!
