Dedicated A380 Facility At DXB

Wed Nov 14, 2012 8:03 pm

Just received this from Skywards (EKs frequent flyer program).

Quote:
In January, Dubai will unveil another world first. And this one is particularly close to our hearts.

Emirates Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport is being expanded to include a brand new, dedicated A380 facility. The only one of its kind in the world. Every gate is designed and built exclusively to accommodate the world's largest airliner.

The new home of our Emirates A380 fleet also features:
Extra spacious, state-of-the-art Lounges
Direct boarding from First Class and Business Class lounges to the A380's upper deck
Underground train connecting to Terminal 3's main arrival and departure halls
Expanded duty-free shopping and dining options
Full-service hotel and spa for our transit passengers

Liking the direct access from Lounges to the upper deck F & J.

I read about it time ago and i forgot about the opening date, but i think is a great idea and of course something to give EK more exclusivity to F and J paxs. I´m really looking forward to see pics and know more about this.

The spa is something that it´s not a new concept because in HEL airport you can experience maybe the best in the world so far, but you never with Dubai, they might make it better.

EK already have 'timeless spa' in the F lounge (complimentary) and J lounge (fee) of DXB. Never been to either but I'd imagine it'll be along the same lines?

Not bad for an airport they have a replacement all lined up for.

boarding from the lounge to the A380 is already done in FRA as well by LH... but well, good to see that EK purpose-builds a "facility" solely for this great aircraft!

The feature is not new. Various airports have it, I would say at least 10. Even JFK..!
What is new is that one airline creates such a dedicated hub facility on that scale tailored to their heavy heavy metal.
Surely premium customers will like the direct discrete boarding and it may become a new industry standard.

Just another indicator of passenger segmentation.

QF get to use this A380 terminal (if and when they get approval for the time-up) as well don't they? How will it work for QF F customers as F is on the lower deck, will they have it battle it out with the masses

For this they still use limousine service ?

I think what he means is that you never have to leave the lounge, go to the conventional boarding area, stand in the conga line to board, etc. - direct from lounge to plane, even if by car.

Do we poor Y class passengers stink so much that even a short mixed boarding walk to the plane is a tragedy for the lucky F and J people?
I suggest another future first for the industry: Y class might be located on the cargo area of the plane so that premium passengers don't even have to accidentally spot them.

You ever been to DXB? They try and keep the hoardes of labourers out of sight so as not to disrupt their image. Naturally, they feel the same about Y pax.

That is so not true. If the laborers are flying EK then they are in terminal 3 with the rest of the EK ticket holders. However, most laborers fly the low cost carriers and they don't fly from T3 but from either T1 or T2. It's not racism, just their choice of airlines to fly.

I've been many times and seen those lines of busses that early morning unload tons of immigrant workers from their sleeping quarters. They then do their jobs for the next 12/15 hours before returning to the busses and eventually to their dormitories on the very outskirt of the city.

By the way every time you come to Dubai you wonder how they built yet another Skyscraper from your last visit of a couple of months ago.

Obviously DXB is the showcase of the city and these people might clash with the Dubai's picture they want to deliver to the world. As in many other cases reality is a little less glittering than it seems.

All in all DXB keeps beeing a world-class facility and this new 380 terminal is going to set the standards for the future.

I wasnt referring to labourers flying Y on EK. Their slave wages are insufficient for that.

I was referring to what JEKY talked about. And that's a near Victorian-era view of class that permeates the entire UAE, Gulf and South Asia.

By the way, I grew up in Sharjah. So I'm not unaware of that country's accomplishments and failures.

As someone who usually avoids lounges (I don't get the fuss, the food offerings are usually mediocre at best, and I like to mingle with people and walk around the terminal), I really don't see what the big deal is all about. F and J passengers already have priority boarding over everyone else anyway and even that I don't see what the advantage is. If I'm going to be stuck in a metal tube for hours I usualy want to board as late as possible, Just my $.02.

I don't think that it has much to do with mingling first and economy passengers and that it has more to do with the simple logistics of boarding ±489 passengers. EK's F and J seats are all on the upper deck. The Y seats are all on the lower deck. They are accessed by separate jet-bridges: two for the lower deck and one for the upper deck. It simply does not make sense to have passengers being forced to go to a lower level of the concourse only to have to go up again and it speeds up the boarding process for all concerned. I doubt that there is anything to stop a J or F passenger from boarding the aircraft from the level of the duty free shops, etc and using the stairs on the aircraft to reach the upper deck. It's unlikely that they would be refused boarding.

Meanwhile here in PER, the last time I flew with EK even economy passengers board at 1L as there was only a single (not split) jet-bridge. That means all passengers got to walk through the cabin with private suites. One passenger suggested that this was to encourage people to upgrade but actually it is because the facilities are so antiquated. LOL

Agreed.

When I have been an F or J passenger I have always stood in queue and not barged my way to the front like I have some sort of divine right.

GLA is particularly bad for that and the only bridge that can accommodate the 773ER is very narrow and old.
