From Tulsa International Airport Facebook page,

It's already the weekend, but we're ready for Monday!! Why? Because of the new non-stop service coming to TUL!!! Stayed tuned for the Monday announcement!

The same day Southwest extends their schedule...

If it's WN then I'd bet TUL-MDW. But likely SFO on UA.

Here's the current non stop destination list:

My bet is on WN to either MDW or BWI. OKC has had BWI for a while and usually TUL follows suit if OKC does well on something. I work for UA in TUL and we have heard nothing about it so I would be surprised if we added SFO!

WN schedule extension is Monday so BWI or MDW would be good guesses. Maybe a weekly MCO for the summer?

I agree that TUL-MDW or BWI by WN or TUL-SFO by UA are the most likely contenders, but here are some thoughts.

WN TUL-MCI (reinstatement)
AA TUL-MIA (reinstatement of sorts, unlikely)
WN TUL-AUS (might work well with continuing service to South Texas)
US TUL-CLT

Far-fetched pipe dreams:
G4 TUL-AZA
WN TUL-ICT-DEN x1 (currently nonstop multiple times a day)
WN TUL-ABQ (reinstatement from years ago)
WN TUL-LIT
WN TUL-CUN (although we'd see HOU-CUN first)
DL TUL-LGA
AC TUL-YYC or TUL-YYZ (either operated by Jazz)
B6 or DL TUL-JFK (once flown by TW, I believe)
AS*/QX TUL-SEA
F9 TUL-DEN (reinstatement)
F9 TUL-MSY

US tried OKC-PHX and LAS a few years back and I believe it didn't last long so I wouldn't count on any US service at TUL.

Interesting. I will be surprised if it is not WN, and I will be surprised if it's something other than TUL-MDW or BWI. These cities are served out of OKC along with MCI, which I'd say is highly unlikely to come back being such a short distance. This will be an extension covering most of the summer so we may see quite a few changes. TUL should be lucky to get be getting any "LUV" if they do as systemwide capacity planned to be relatively flat for the time being.

I still see a chance of US. I no they flew to OKC(AW) it's funny how people don't say CLT will work where there is 646 flights a day that's double than PHX so wouldn't you think CLT stands a chance

But at the end I honestly believe it will be WN with a TUL-MDW or TUL-BWI

As with many airports, TUL has seen quite the capacity cuts over the past decade or so. Here are some stats the TUL fans might be enjoy:

2001 2007 2012

Total daily flights 92 85 64

Total airports 17 23 17

Total cities 15 21 15

Total seats 9,428 7,244 5,914

Why? As it stands now, Tulsa has non-stop service to Florida, and OKC does not. The markets are very similar - no reason one would get a route over another. And their respective destinations list are extremely similar.

Interesting. It would be telling to also see the total pax volume at TUL for those 3 years listed; I'm sure all of the categories would continue to show obvious relationships/synergies.

Nice to hear of something new coming to TUL. I hope it's something significant.

Just since nobody's mentioned it, I'll go with Spirit to DFW. (But down deep inside, I'd probably bet on Canyon Blue.)

Good luck everyone!

The MIA service is solely due to AA's maintenance hub at TUL. Take that away, and TUL is pretty close to an all-RJ airport (minus WN).

It was introduced as a temporary route at the time to route planes for seat reconfiguration while the 738s were getting new interiors.

With that no longer needed, the route actually was suspended, but later resumed as a winter-only service (when it was done for maintenance purposes it ran during the summer, too).

Not really.

OKC has:

AA: DFW, LAX, ORD
WN: DAL, HOU, DEN, LAS, MCI, STL, BWI, MDW, PHX
UA: CLE DEN IAH SFO LAX IAD EWR ORD
DL: MEM SLC ATL DTW MSP
F9: DEN

TUL: AA: DFW, ORD, MIA
WN: DAL, HOU, DEN, LAS, PHX, STL
UA: DEN, IAH, LAX, IAD, EWR, ORD
DL: MEM, SLC, ATL, DTW, MSP

TUL has that OKC does not: MIA-AA

OKC has that TUL does not: LAX-AA, CLE-UA, SFO-UA, MDW-WN, MCI-WN, BWI-WN, DEN-F9

Total pax 2011 Jan-Dec:
OKC: 3,561,605 (+2.75% over 2010)
TUL: 2,794,290 (-1.84% from 2010)

I'm standing on WN to either/both MDW and BWI. If we (UA) get SFO, I'll be really surprised as again, we haven't heard anything about it internally. Also, mornings are pretty crazy as it is with 4 usable gates with 7 RONs and 6 departures in the first hour or so!

While I do think the new service will be WN to MDW or BWI, since it is coinciding with Southwest's new network release. I wonder when AA will expand LAX services to TUL? This seems like AA's gaping network whole as they continue to expand their LAX.

It's posted now, with a notation about the "918" flight number. Very cute. There is now too much service from Tulsa to Chicago. AA does not fill its 738 on most days (unless you count nonrevs), and AA and UA both fly to O'Hare. More capacity will be cut, but Southwest will thrive. My guess is that AA will downgrade ORD to an RJ over the summer. Tulsans love Southwest Airlines in spite of their love/hate relationship with AA. What I wonder, though, is what the future is of the TUL-STL flight; would a number of those passengers now connect over MDW instead of STL? Or is there enough O&D demand between TUL and STL to sustain the flight?

Its not disappointing at all. It will allow for a lot more connections and great for business passengers. You can easily connect to Florida if you wish but MDW is a much better choice.

Barely.

I suspect there will be a loss of some connecting passengers in STL, but not all will choose MDW of course. STL offers markets like DCA (not offered out of MDW), LGA, BOS, Florida, and other places to supplement available MDW connections from TUL.

Maybe we could see Allegiant some day TUL-PIE and/or TUL-SFB? This may be the best shot of Florida service from TUL.

Depends on what is needed for mx re-positioning. At some point you just need to get the a/c there and loads be damned.

This is good news for TUL. Could it mean STL goes away over time? Maybe. However, Florida sucks from Oklahoma. Many airlines have tried they all have failed.

G4 gave OKC a shot to LAS. They were also ready to announce OKC-SFB, but realized it wasn't going to work and shut the market down (at least we still see a several of their a/c here for mx). Delta, Frontier, and Southwest all had nonstop flights to MCO and they all flopped.

My impression is that Oklahoma beach traffic is spread too thinly over Mexico, California and Florida to warrant nonstop service. It's hard being in the middle of the country with a population of less than a million. Everyone wants to go every which direction at a given time, but there's not enough demand to warrant nonstop flights. By offering MDW, WN likely made a good decision, as that gives TUL flyers more choices for connections to the Upper Midwest and Northeast.

TUL is probably more prone to leakage than OKC when it comes to Florida as well. You have G4 a short drive away in Springfield and Fayetteville. OKC doesn't really have that exposure, but there is some leakage to DFW if the fares are good enough. The bigger problem is the lack of incentive to run N/S flights to Florida with no real business traffic. If they found massive natural gas pockets in FL that could be drilled, then we would be in business.
