Turkish Airlines Further Expands In Africa

On Dec 4, TK starts flying to Kilimanjaro and Mombasa.

TK673 IST1810 – 0155+1JRO0255+1 – 0355+1MBA0500+1 – 1045+1IST 739 x35

On Dec 15, Niamey and Ouagadougou are starting.

TK597 IST1745 – 2255NIM2355 – 2355OUA0055+1 – 0915+1IST 739 146

Finally, on Dec 21, Douala and Yaounde will be initiated.

TK669 IST1745 – 2350NSI0050+1 – 0145+1DLA0245+1 – 1045+1IST 739 x247

In addition, Buenos Aires is to be started on Dec 11.

I checked a bit the prices to fly from german airports to the new destinations and compared with AF and they are very very competitive. Of course this is only a picture of the moment, but TK charges 500-600 euros whereas AF charges 1000-1100 euros...

Love it. Much better than when I went to Niamey via Paris and got in in the wee hours of the morning several years ago. The combination of doing a Niger + Burkina Faso route certainly makes it much more promising, as I am certain a straight Turkey to Niger route would be unsuccessful. I think this one could do well.

GIven that your choice is pretty limited to DLA/NSI, the times aren't going to be a major factor.

KQ has been funneling some of this traffic via NBO.

The entry of TK makes things interesting.

I am curious about why they chose to use 739's to open the routes. They must be expecting good loads.

Ditto the 77W to EZE 3 x weekly instead of a using a smaller widebody to grow the route before bringing the big twin into play

Well, I swear when I took it around 4 years ago that I arrived in the middle of the night. Maybe I travel too much and am getting my trips confused

China was definitely the market I assumed they were catering to. It won't be a slam dunk my any means, but I do hope it can survive.

Great news for TK and the traveling public, more options to choose from.

I have flown to ADD last year via IST and the 738 were a bit crammed. And ADD is not teh longest stretch from IST on a single aisle. So hopefully the 739s have more leg room.


BTW, slightly off topic but anyone knows where I can get a timeline of TK commercials with the likes of Kobe Bryant, FC Barca, etc.? I have looked at teh history and sponsorship pages on their websites but did not get anything. I am trying to find out when (month and year) they started their association with Kobe, Barca, Man U. etc

Aren't there lots of options to DLA? AF and Brussels are very direct from Europe of course, KQ and Ethiopian less so, but at least the times are good. Royal Air Maroc is in the market but also with after mid-night hours.

I don't think these flights connect with China.

TK is sending these 739s everywhere in Africa! What kind of IFE do they have? I'm scheduled to take one to DAR next week...

I'd be interested in hearing about the profitability of these flights a year after they are started. I'm a little skeptical, but wth the 739s, perhaps there is enough demand. I know AF does well because of historical ties; I'm not sure what ties TK and IST have to Africa and whether that makes a difference.
