787-10 Authority To Offer Coming, But Not So Soon

Wed Nov 28, 2012 3:17 am

Boeing says "Boeing: more work needed before launch of stretch 787".

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/...26/us-boeing-idUSBRE8AP12320121126

The previous reports on the 10 seemed to indicate it's official launch was imminent. Not so much now. Both the 777X and 787-10 are going slower than expected. Any guesses as to when?

I'm guessing a formal launch at Paris this summer, since I do not believe there are any major air shows before than now that Asian Aerospace in March is defunct.

As to why it's going slower, if customers are most interested in efficiency instead of extra range, then Boeing needs to concentrate on empty weight savings, aerodynamic tweaks (laminar flow leading edges) and engine efficiencies (Trent 1000-TEN and GEnx1B PiP3).

Yes, the previous reports for the last 5 years seemed to indicate that the 787-10 launch was imminent, yet it is still not launched.

At some point the NYSE should take a stand on all of these false product launch stories that Boeing places with friendly news sources as a cynic might think all of this constant launch speculation was about supporting the BA share price.

That's my best bet. Paris Air Show is quite a place for publicity, so it would make most sense. Maybe we'll see a potential launch customer too.

Many, if not most, of the reports aren't actually coming from Boeing, and the ones that are, tend to be very vague. I really doubt the -10 has or will have any effect on the stock price until it actually is formally launched.

The delay of the "330-300 killer" means the old gal has some life left in her....

I guess the priorities for Boeing are:

1. Crank out 10 787's per month, and

2. Get the 789 into service

In tandem with getting the 737MAX, and 767 tanker programs up to speed.

After that unleash the R&D engineers onto the 7810 and 777X programs.

In reality, there is no rush in officially launching the -10 because a delay of months or even years won't make a lick of difference to when it could possibly enter service, since the -10 is based on the -9, and the -9 hasn't even flown yet.

Aspire has weighed in with a further article . A point that they are making is that Boeing are most unlikely to allow airlines to switch early heavily discounted 788/9 orders to a heavily discounted 787-10. Presumably Boeing see no reason at this time to discount the 787-10 and this makes sense since as a relatively simple derivative there should be few if any unknowns at EIS.

The 787-10 being discussed now is a quite different airplane than what was discussed 5 years ago. There was also a long stretch of time in the middle when nothing was said of the 787-10 at all.

Not when but a guess why:
A straight forward stretch could have been launched a long time ago. So it's not about a straight forward stretch.

Seems that Boeing wants to keep other options open. The 781 needs to be positioned properly in their long term product strategy. Which means that their plans for the 748, 777X and even Y3 do have impact on the kind of upgrade that is going to be the optimum for the 781.

Read something about 3 axle MLG for upping the MTOW and range. How much weight would that add? There is a limit at 250t?

It may yet be just that.

I'd argue what has held back the launch of the 787-10 is the necessity for Boeing to get the 787-8 into "smooth" production and show that they have gained control over the production process at PAE and CHS (including the EMC and Surge Lines).

To launch (at the time) a fourth 787 model while they were still trying to screw the first airframe together or working through the testing and certification issues would have been met on this board and the investment community with catcalls and derision.

By the time of the Paris Air Show, 787 production should be at 7 per month from the FALs, most (if not all) of LN20-LN40 aircraft should have been delivered (leaving only the "terrible teens"), a few more customers should have received their first 787-8s and the first 787-9 should be in the FAL.

Announcing the 787-10 at that point makes a fair bit more sense, IMO.
