Q400s For United Express (Republic)

Wed Nov 28, 2012 1:56 pm

This is my second attempt posting this topic as the first one didn't go through. I'm not sure if this was discussed previously.

I have noticed that all of the ex-Colgan Air Q400s are now being operated by Republic out of DEN. Will these aircraft ever be cycled back through to the east coast United hubs like EWR and IAD or will they be strictly DEN based?

Many thanks

They're showing up in the EWR and IAD schedules for Winter '13.

Nooooo, this will probably force them to backtrack on one of the changes I like.

At EWR most of the Explus planes are now going from terminal C rather than A. That is awesome......

If the Q's come back they will force the explus flights back to A.

Not necessarily, if anything it will make more sense to keep the large RJs in C, and move the Q400s to A to be with the ERJs.

Out of interest, what is the status of the Commutair flying?

The excellent "United Airlines Fleet Website" lists the entire Q300 and a large portion of the Q200 fleet as having being withdrawn from service.

Quoting RyanairGuru (Reply 4):

Due to the wingspan of the Q400s they have to be at the C gates. Also, for one I know that IAD-PVD goes back to the Q400 on december 19th.

Does UA still use the three legacy gates in the A-1 concourse at EWR?

Obviously EWR is space premium and this is much easier said than done, but I'm sure that they would like to shut these gates down. If nothing else, they have their own UnitedClub!

Aren't those gates where one of the 11. September planes departed from?

The Q400 will stay at Terminal C. Probably the 170's as well. B6 has finally moved from Gates 21-22. So we now have the whole A-2 concourse. But the new gates aren't operational yet, but the lines are painted for ERJ's and 170's. If by chance the 170's come back to A-2, there will be 4 gates (21, 22, 24A, 25) will be able to handle them. But they will stay at C-2 (except the inbound YYT non- pre clear at C-3.

The Q's will stay at Terminal C.

The Q400's problems in DEN have nothing to do with DEN, but rather simply teething issues with a large-scale ramp-up by YX. The Q400's aren't leaving DEN. There are just more coming online that will be flying the EWR and IAD operations. They will have major Q400 operations in all 3.

Further, is there room for them all at C during peak times? I was under the impression that mainline took up a large proportion of the available gates.

B6 has the two remaining UA gates (16-17) Gate 18 is a common use gate but B6 has access to it as we'll. WN has the other former UA gates (14-15) in the slot swap deal, along with Gate 10. AC has gates 11-12.
There s no Gate 13 at A-1.

Most of the 170's come and go in the mid-afternoon bank. Now with the Q400 in the mix, I'm pretty sure that bank can handle the activity. But more than likely Terminal A may see a couple of 170's.

We don't park any of our 170's at terminal A anymore, since the first week of November. We mostly get the odd numbered C101-111 gates and sometimes C70 and a couple of others on the end of C-2. It sounded like the move was going to be permanent with no further operations scheduled at A.

And while UA doesn't have any Q400s per se, more and more Q400's will be re-entering service in the coming months as RJET ramps up to the full fleet of 32. It's going to be exciting to watch.

UA has transferred space in A-1 to B6. The A-1 United Club (former RCC) closed on 11/11. Rumors were that AC would take over the UC space as they did at LGA, but that has failed to materialize. The former United Club at A-1 is a large facility, even including a onetime International First Lounge, a remnant of extensive United operations at EWR in the 1990s through early 2000s. It is probably too big for AC's somewhat modest EWR station.

For what it's worth I recently had a trip on UAX that was Q400 both ways. The outbound leg was delayed two hours due to late inbounder, then a mechanical issue, then the need to add fuel. Not good. The return was simply canceled. The CSA at the airport indicated it was a mechanical issue that caused the cancellation. United did handle the cancellation well, we were rebooked on F9 and were delayed only a few minutes.

It wasn't really a good trip in terms of demonstrating the usefulness of the Q400.

I believe that will continue as it is entirely separate - from what I understand the only real change is who is flying the Q's now. Everything else should be similar (aside from normal migration around the system as UA refines it's route network).

Isn't the Q400 one of the few remaining RJs that do routes to places like ASE? I seem to remember that CRJs and/or ERJs have some trouble, and they need either Q's or CR7s for that.

I believe they are, because from Feb 10th to Mar 10th there is a two-class Q400 operating EWR-MYR. Doesn't seem like a route they would put the planes on if they have other routes that would have more F-demand.

That seems interestingly specific!

Let's be honest, there won't be any paid F demand on this route, and with those times there won't even be any TATL connections where somebody might have flown into EWR in J.

I would therefore have thought that the more obvious thing to do would be to put up a generic one-class seat map, and then surprise some lucky elites if an 2 class bird operates on a given day.

Unless they sell out the Y cabin, why not show F for sale, if you get even just 1 booking then it was worth it? Also, I believe EWR will recieve only 2 class Q400's. So as those come online you'll see more of them at EWR.

I'm guessing it is an upguage for the February break season, because after that it goes back to the E-145XR.   Though I don't know how many spring-breakers coming from NYC, as many districts up here lost February break, like ours here on LI.

I understand that much, but with 6/32 frames there is a decent chance that a non-F frame could be subbed, thus disappointing that person who did pay for F. That said, I didn't realize that only 2 were going to EWR. If they are both F frames then obviously it wouldn't be an issue.

Maybe not on that individual route, but connections matter. I fly into SYR all the time, and would love to upgrade, but I'm not going to pay or use miles if it only means one of my two flights.

How long is the Republic contract for?

I assume once the new UA pilot contract is approved most (all?) Q400s will be replaced by CRJ700s.

What routes can the Q400 do that the CRJ700/ERJ170 can not do or practically can not do?

Why should they be? The Q400 has great operating costs and carries a few more passengers than a CR7.

Under 500 miles (e.g. from IAH: OKC, DAL, SAN, MSY...) it beats the CR7 handily.
