Takeoff Performance

Which commercial airliner has the best takeoff performance. Out of all the planes I've flown on, I'd probably say the 737 or 757.

Try flying on a Garuda DC-10 on a 3 hour flight from PER-DPS.

You had better have your seat belt on!!!!

From what i have heard, the 757 when delaing with a difficult DP or such.

I cannot provide any specifications that would suggest one aircraft having better takeoff performance than another (all things being relatively equal). What I can offer is my impressions of the most thrilling takeoffs I have experienced.

Hands down, the most amazing acceleration I have experienced was on a CO 737-300 from CLE to MDW about four years ago. The captain said something about that aircraft being equipped with some type of additional takeoff boost (I know that sounds ridiculously simplified but I cannot recall the details) although maybe what he meant was he was simply doing a full-power takeoff rather than a reduced-power one. At any rate, we were not very full at all and, I swear, it seems we shot off the ground in about 10-12 seconds.

Other than that experience, the most thrilling takeoffs I have experienced have always been in 757s and, believe it or not, one time on an AA 767-300ER flying from BRU to ORD. That was amazing considering the pax load and fuel that must have been required for that journey. I was truly impressed.

From what I've seen in Heathrow:

1.) private business jets
2.) B757 and B747SP
3.) light MD11 (Swissair) or B767 (KLM), and B737


The worst performances:

1.) Turboprops
2.) Bae146
3.) A340
4.) A319 - they tended to use up more runway than some fully loaded 744s!

Hi

I am quite impressed by SAS' DC-9's... lining up for take-off, cranking the engines up while still keeping the brakes on.... and swoosh - off you go.

At least, that's what it feels like.

I look forward to my D92 flight on 30 Oct.... SK860 CPH-BGO.

And I agree with A student - the BAe 146 (or Jumbolino as it is nicknamed in Europe) seems to roll for ages before it rotates.

Man, that powerful DC-9.....

On aircraft that I have been on, the best takeoffs have been on the old 737-200's of Alliance Air. I dont think even the 737NG's give such an impressive performance.

In regards to the SK DC-9s, the 9-21 is the best (as you will be flying, lucky thing  

Overpowered engines, large wing, small fuselage. Little wonder it's known as the "DC-9 Sport". But not the best economic wonder.

In regards to the best perceived takeoff performance, the A320 downunder has the best feel, atmosphere to it. Nose rises a bit, wonderful whoosh spool up and then the CFM56 buzz, the whole experience. Simply wonderful. The 737 2nd Gen in comparison is quite boring. With the Boeings, you don't quite get that feel, IMHO to takeoff (ok, I confess I haven't been on an A340...yet!)

Best takeoff performance, probably an AN763 doing a MEL-SYD run. Max derate is 60°C, but its still loaded with power. Never seen any plane at Melbourne Airport takeoff in such a short distance.

Iwould say the 757 or Dc-9 I spent about 2 hours watching planes take off in Moscow, and I was amazed at how little space a BA 757 took. And when I was on a Finnair Dc-9 we took off, and after a few minutes we reached our cruzing altitude.

I have to say, the 777 has the best takeoff performance I've ever experienced. It's such a powerful aircraft, that it just felt like slicing through air. Very smooth, effortless.

I agree with Hepkat, the most impressive performance is the B777. Last June I flew LGW to MBJ with BA, the take off for the 25 minute trip across Jamaica from Kingston to Montego Bay was unbelieveable. Two thirds of the passengers (and their luggage had disembarked) at Kingston, and although the plane was refuelled, I know from the return journey that it is refuelled again at Montego Bay... so it presumably had a relatively light fuel load.
The angle of climb seemed to be steeper than usual, and the plane banked sharply shortly after takeoff to cross the airport and Kingston. Even my non-aviation interested wife was impressed.
By the way, the landing at Kingston was an absolute greaser, my only landing where the passengers have applauded. (Brits don't applaud except in exceptional circumstances!!!)

I remember being very impressed with the short take-off run while flying a DC-9-10 series aircraft with a light load. Take-off run lasted all of ten or so seconds, or so it seemed. That considered, the take-off run aboard the -21s mentioned earlier must have been amazing. Readers lucky enough to be living in the San Diego, California, area can still experience a ride on one of these rocket sleds aboard Allegiant Air's DC-9 shorty (a former SAS machine).

I have seen a Lear Jet make an amazing near vertical take-off at an airshow, but a bizjet isn't a true airliner.

From my experience 737NGs, A32Xs, and 757s are by far the best runway performers with any sort of load. All have powerful wings and overpowered engines.

In March while waiting for my departure to Houston at National airport I was watching the morning departure from RWY 01. A very lightly loaded (this was a saturday) USAirways Shuttle A320 to LGA was out of there like a bat out of hell (remember DCA's main runway is only 6850' long) and a CRJ that went behind it took its sweet time. CRJs are quite the runway hog.

Hands down it still has to go to the 757. Incredibly powerful wing with hot-rodded engines. Can't beat it.

I heard that the 767 series was also a good runway performer used for high altitude takeoffs, some higher than FL100...

It would have been on an 737-200 SWEET power that plane has!!!!!!!!!!
