IL76 Crash Brazzaville; 30 Feared Dead

Fri Nov 30, 2012 9:24 pm

At least 30 are feared dead after an IL76 overran the runway at Brazzaville, hitting 15 houses and then, running into a ravine and catching fire.

Developing story; reports still coming in and sketchy.

Horrible news. How far off the runway did it go? It seems like it must've gone pretty far to hit 15 houses!

R.I.P. to all those lost and/or have lost loved-ones in this tragedy.

Looking at satellite images of the airfield, it seems like they must have been landing on 23R. It looks like there is a neighborhood off the end of the runway, followed by a strip of vegetation that could be a ravine, then another cluster of buildings beyond the ravine...

Flying in Africa is always an adventure, especially with old Soviet airframes like the IL-76. That aircraft has a weird approach...

It is best not to categorize Africa as one entity when it comes to aviation safety...

SW733, statistics speak for themselves: Africa has the worst aviation record of any ICAO region

Well, any generalization is probably just that, generalization. That said, our African governments MUST take collective action to put a stop to these needless carnages. Until they do that, we will be the laughing stock of the World and of A.net too.

He should have said Central Africa. Then nobody could complain about his statement.

That's sort of like saying that since the UK, Germany, and France have are major players in the global economy, Moldova is too, since they're on the same continent. Africa is a variegated continent - I would trust SAA much more than some of the other airlines therein.

No, it's not "sort of like saying" that!

It's like saying that if Europe is a major player in the global economy, then Moldova is included, since it's part of Europe.

If the statistics are such that Africa has the worse aviation record, in terms of crashes, then of course that includes all countries in the continent.

Yes, a generalization for sure .... but not incorrect (if it's a fact!).

But Air Moldova is an excellent airline. I flew with their EM190 and even EM120: great service, knowing their technical staff, the maintenance of the aircraft is perfect. And Chisinau airport is very modern, clean and efficient!

I wonder why you used Moldova as a comparison. Have you got some inside knowledge of the aviation industry there? That's a pretty cheap shot at a country with a long history of aviation... If you make such statements, please back them up with facts and links.

Thank you

As tragic as these crashes are, far worse things happen daily in these regions unfortunately, and should be dealt with first. In fact the violence on the ground is the reason many things and people fly to begin with.

If you actually read what he said before your kneejerk reactions you will see that he was not comparing Moldova's aviation industry with the UK, Germany, and France, he was comparing their economies. He is not bashing Moldova...he is just making a valid point.

Anyways hope the death toll doesn't go up any more.

It is indeed a tragic accident. Most of those posting here are preempting the outcome of any crash investigation whilst generalising about the state of African airlines.
Wait for the facts first please.

There are no more facts needed to emphasize the dangers of flying in Central Africa.
