Damascus Airport Update?

Mon Dec 03, 2012 5:22 am

I have read that Damascus airport is closed. Does anyone have more information? Just curious on what kind of measures have airlines taken in regards to crew and flights to Damascus.

Emirates has suspended operations until further notice, but EgyptAir still is planning to resume operations today and is selling seats for the flights today.

I have no direct information, but I think it would be safe to assume that

1) Pilot's discretion upon arrival at the airport area that it is safe to land,
2) Crew stays on the aircraft, or at a minimum does not depart the immediate gate area,
3) Same crew flies the aircraft out. No overnights or extended stays.

Airlines do not want their aircraft, or crews, on the ground long at airports in areas under potential conflict.

Apparently EgyptAir tried to fly into Damascus yesterday, but the flight was turned back to Cairo.

Is Syrian Arab Airlines even still flying? I know Turkey forced one of their planes to land recently. Their website acts as if there is nothing wrong.

There was a flight to Moscow the other day operated by a A320.

All of their five A320-200s have been flying today on flights from Damascus to Cairo, Khartoum, Kuwait and Yerevan and from Aleppo to Cairo. The sixth A320-200 obviously is damaged and on the ground in Damascus following the helicopter collission. Earlier this month Syrianair has also been flying to Abu Dhabi, Algiers, Doha, Dubai, Jeddah, Moscow Vnukovo, Riyadh etc. Their A320 fleet is equipped with ACARS so can easily be tracked. I would assume their loads are really bad but most probably they will keep flying for as long as they can.

One would assume that loads are probably good on the way out and very poor on the way in.

My guess is that BEY and AMM are doing well picking up passengers headed to or leaving DAM

I am watching Al-Jazeera right now. They say most flights at the Damascus airport are cancelled. The rebels are near the airport.

however they were not specific as to what constitutes most flights.
