Which Will Fly First, CS100 Or A359?

Wed Dec 05, 2012 2:25 am

As the title says, since there are those two development running in parallel, what's your thoughts on which will fly first?

The Bombardier CS100 was supposed to fly by year end but then the Airbus A350-900 flying prototype was seen rolled out first today.

The first flying A350 is still in the FAL?

I know the Static test frame was rolled out to be transferred to a different building.

That was the first A350 that will fly, not the static test frame.

I haven't been following the C-series production all that much. When is it scheduled to have its first flight?

CS100 was poised to fly by year end but a few weeks ago BBD admitted up to a 6 months delay so they are now targeting June 2013.

source: http://atwonline.com/aircraft-engine...s-first-flight-eis-six-months-1108

That being said someone else at BBD (can't remember name or source I'll look for it...) recently said it could be quite early in 2013. One thing is sure we have yet to see a full CS100 with wings so far, even tough the static is fully assembled and flight test vehicle #1 (FTV1) is well under way.

This will be a tight race. Maybe we'll be lucky enough to see one or both at the Paris air show!

I can't wait! I just love BBD aircraft. This one is going to be a beauty.

It was Chet Fuller, senior vice president for Bombardier Commercial Aircraft.

Thanks! I've been searching through my aviation news/blog site looking for the source but it was nowhere to be found.

Right now the A350 seems to be a couple of weeks ahead of the CS100. But due to the size and bigger complexity of the A350, I think it will take longer to complete than the CSeries.

That I would hope for, but not expect as the risk is too high.

Either way, it is two new aircraft I am excited about!

That wasn't a proper roll-out, as the aircraft is far from ready. It was more like transfering the aircraft from one stall to another

The race is on and if all goes to plan they may end up flying within few weeks of each other. Both are targeting first flight in 1H 2013, the sooner the better. And both have the common incentive of Le Bourget in june (while I don't expect a visit of the aircraft, it is a big marketing boost to have a flying test frame to talk about at the show - particularly for the CSeries).

Quoting Polot (Reply 2):

That was the first A350 that will fly, not the static test frame.

Both statements are correct. The static test frame is complete and has been moved to the static tests facility. MSN1 is structurally complete and has been moved to the next FAL station for further equipping.

On the BBD side, IIRC the static frame fuselage is complete, no wings yet, and FTV1 is underway but progress not known.

It will be an interesting de facto "race", even if both aircraft models are not racing each other in the market.

At least the A359 has had a "roll-out" and power on which the CS100 has not [as far as is publicly known].

In the race to first flight, the A359 could be said to be in front of the CS100 by a short head

Look for the C Series to have wings next week if all goes well

when is the last time we had two concurrent programs being developed in parallel and that both served the same market? L1011 and DC9?

The first 787-8 without the need for extensive re-work.

I'm kidding!

I don't think those served the same market. Perhaps you meant DC10?

I don't recall how concurrent they were, but the MD-11 and A330/A340 were developed close to each other, with the 777 coming a few years later.

Coming up, you'll have the 737MAX and A320neo running more or less neck-and-neck, though neither of them are brand new designs.
The plural of Airbus is Airbuses. Airbii is not a word, and doesn't even make sense.

I think with the revised schedule, BBD gave themselves more than enough buffer space. They want to be confident (and so do their customers) that the revised schedule will be met. A revisit of the 787 is not acceptable. I am optimistic that the CS100 prototype will be rolled out by February and FF perhaps in late April/early May.

Whether it can get to Paris is another issue and entirely dependent on flight test progress. But it would be sweet to see it there.
