AA 777 Incident JFK

Wed Dec 05, 2012 8:22 am

This evening two AA 777s struck one another at JFK. 7BK operating as trip 106 JFK-LHR was being towed to the end of the alleyway when it struck aircraft 7AE parked on gate 3 at terminal 8. 7BK suffered minimal damage to the right, co-pilot side wingtip while 7AE suffered what appears to be significant damage to the APU area. Both aircraft are currently out of service.

Luckily there were no injuries to the passengers onboard trip 106.

Unfortunately aircraft damage caused by ground crews happens everyday. Usually due to people not following procedures. Obviously the wing walkers were not doing their job.

Ouch! I'm sure this is the last type of thing AA needs at this time in it's business! Glad everybody is okay and hopefully whoever loses their job over this finds work soon.

like with all of aviation the person who was responsable for the incident probably had that one second where they were not paying attention... shows how when on the ramp full awareness is necessary.

If the aircraft was being towed and being pushed back then there might not have been wing walkers. But I do agree with you that someone was not doing there job. Injuries and aircraft damage are almost always the result of negligence.

A/C 7BK is already back in service and operating the same flt 106 today (05dec). She safely made it off the ground this time.

It is AA policy to have wing walkers on all aircraft ground movements until the aircraft is in a position to safely taxi under engine power. There is a ground handling checklist for each aircraft and each parking spot and ramp area has lines painted to follow during pushout.

Someone didn't do their job plain and simple. I doubt they got fired, the union will always protect them no matter how negligent they are.
